Ukrainian Intelligence Seize Arms Cache as They Uncover 'Russian' Plot to Attack Kiev

Russian special forces plotted a series of armed attacks against Ukrainian cabinet ministers and several other targets in Ukraine’s capital city of Kiev this week, according to a spokesperson for Ukraine’s counter-intelligence services (SSU), after a weapons cache was uncovered.

The explosive allegations come ahead of parliamentary elections in Ukraine on Sunday, and a suspected assassination attempt on a parliamentary candidate on Monday.

The SSU seized weapons including portable air defence systems and rocket propelled grenade launchers believed to belong to the group behind the plot from a location in Kiev, according to a press statement in the service’s official website also featuring pictures of the equipment.

The alleged cell, who the SSU claims were recruited and equipped by Russian special forces, met under the guise of the NGO ‘Hromadska Initiativa’ (Public Initiative) and planned to destabilise the situation in the capital through organising both armed attacks on “high ranking officials and critical infrastructure”, while also sparking “public unrest” and pro-Russian sentiments among Ukrainians, a statement from the SSU read.

The alleged leader of the group, 22-year-old Ukrainian-born Russian citizen Sergei Rastrigin has been detained by Ukrainian authorities amidst suspicion he was recruited by the Russian secret service, Elena Gitlyanskaya of the SSU told Ukrainian news agency UNIAN.

If this turns out to be accurate and true, including Russia's support / participation, then there is no reason for countries not to support Ukraine, up to and including military assets.

I also think its possible Putin just opened the door for the same action on his government - again, if the accusations are true.

According to the article its the Ukraine government in whole. It looks like the goal was to completely destabalize the government with attacks followed up by assassination attempts.

Well its nice to hear of a Spy agency doing some REAL work now a days.

It would seem to me that there is little need for anyone to destabilize a country that is a border line basket case .Think about it for a moment . They are going to have new elections because the last one couldn't get their S&@$ together and despite the attempt to stop the civil war in the east ,rages on . I think Putin would be wise to keep playing his game until the people decide to take matters into their own hands . That may be what is happening in this piece and may have nothing to do with Russia . imo a reply to: Xcathdra

If true...

I say this because we have seen in the past how quickly an election can change if its undermined before the elections. Take Spain and its train bombing as an example.

Its entirely possible, while the plot may exist, might be made into something larger in order to swing votes / get more people to vote by demonstrating the "Russian threat".

and because the last government couldn't get their crap together it resigned. Hence the reason we have new elections coming up in Ukraine.

This would be the most beneficial time for Russia / Pro Russia to make its move against Ukraine. We saw the argument made before in the East and South about the governments inability to protect people. A situation like this occurring in Kiev could impact areas outside of the east / South.

As for Russian involvement I agree and stated as much. While I am sure a plot existed Russia may be added to the narrative for impact.

Is this like the time Kiev immediately said Russia shot down MH-17? Still waiting for the evidence for that one as well.

See the problem with stories like this, mostly it just comes from one side about the other and Kiev has done that consistently since the last supposedly democratic elections in Ukraine.

And another thing, in your haste to post yet another anti-Russia story, you seem to have forgotten to question the deeper aspects. I hate to tell you this, but Ukraine is already seriously destabilized.

Of course, none of this is helped further by the fact that Kiev indiscrimately bombed it's own citizens and also recently, were found to have used incendiary cluster bombs, which is a war crime.

Personally I don't trust Kiev one bit and until concrete evidence is produced for any accusations, they are propagandists. There's also the murderers of the passengers and crew of MH-17 running around Ukraine and as no guilty party has been caught, Kiev could still be responsible for the shoot down

The Chaos that is required will be created however they may.....

This news is just a diversion from Kiev Junta which is planning a multiple pronged attack on Dontesk in coming few days. This attack will come from S-W, W and N directions and lots of men and material have been accumulated in three specific areas.

Today Igor Strelkov went on a TV Channel and formally requested Russia to intervene before it is too late.

The strategy of Kiev Junta is to launch a strong and swift attack and take important areas including Donetsk or even partial of the city. Then dig in and fight a defensive war. Junta forces have been getting their rears kicked in the offensive war and they now want to fight defensively.

It is important that Russia get its troops in at strategic points and even preempt an attack destroying the several force concentrations of the Kiev Junta. This fascist Junta needs one final hard beating before it itself declares Western Ukraine a breakaway free country and puts to rest all this Ukraine controversy and geopolitics. That would be their best bet otherwise they might have to settle with mere 20% of the map and be vassals to Poland for time to come.

Didnt Strelkov leave his leadership position for Russia bout 2 months back?

Thats what alot of media had reported when it happened.

His word wouldnt mean much now anyway if not in that leadership position.

regarding the forthcoming elections, one reason it is being held is to remove any remnant of pro-russian politicians still left within the current parliament.

Word is Strelkov wanted to unite the two armies of Dontesk and Lughansk into one entity.

That had people in Kremlin scared as they always suspected Strelkov to come to Moscow with his Ultranationalist agenda. This is something he has denied time and again and has said to have no political ambitions at all.

There was also rumor about the outrageous methods proposed by Strelkov regarding the defense of Donetsk like bringing down tall buildings to stop the enemy advance etc.

In Russian game no one knows the real truth. Somewhere I read that people are suspecting that Putin is not in control in Kremlin and is taking orders from some others inside the FSB. That might be true as such important matters like "playing war" etc. are a committee decisions taken after consulting with all the analysts and experts on the issues. Another word is all the liberals and oligarchs are badly weakened in Kremlin now. Strong ball is with the Siloviki i.e. those from FSB and military circles. It is possible that Putin might snatch all the compnies from Oligarchs and send them into exile or worse to retirement in Siberian farm houses.
