Israel as a sovereign nation has no choice but to protect it's citizens which is pretty much priority number one of a nation. When the enemy you are fighting hides weapons in schools and targets civilians there really isn't any choice you have to eliminate the treat because nothing is off the table for the Hammas.

Would there be peace if Hamas quit bombing Israel?

Nobody likes the elimination of Israel,
Very wrong again actually, the Hamas charter calls for the destruction of Israel... but let's ignore that!

There is a difference between protecting yourself and targeting children.

Your op ignores everything that has gone before.
What? That this is about the 20th time in 30 years that Palestinian Radicals have provoked israle to defend itself?

Hamas said it fired five rockets at Israel late Saturday after rejecting Israel's offer to extend a 12-hour humanitarian cease-fire by four hours, casting new doubt on international efforts to broker an end to 19 days of fighting.

Hmm a search engine dished out this:
North Korea To Send Hamas Weapons, Communication Equipment In Secret Arms Deal
Hamas and North Korea in secret arms deal
Iran admits giving Hamas technology for missiles
The weapons, often generically referred to as Qassams, were initially crude and short-range, mainly affecting Sderot and other communities bordering the Gaza Strip. However, in 2006 more sophisticated rockets began to be deployed, reaching the larger coastal city of Ashkelon, and by early 2009 major cities Ashdod and Beersheba had been hit by Katyusha, WS-1B[8] and Grad rockets.[9] In 2012, Jerusalem and Israel's commercial center Tel Aviv were targeted with locally made "M-75" and Iranian Fajr-5 rockets, respectively,[10] and in July 2014, the northern city of Haifa was targeted for the first time.[11] A few projectiles have contained white phosphorus
Attacks have been carried out by all Palestinian armed groups,[19] and, prior to the 2008–2009 Gaza War, were consistently supported by most Palestinians,[20][21][22][23] although the stated goals have been mixed. The attacks, widely condemned for targeting civilians, have been described as terrorism by United Nations, European Union and Israeli officials, and are defined as war crimes by human rights groups Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. Indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian structures that do not discriminate between civilians and military targets are illegal under international law.[24][25]

They would tend to live longer if they fought with logic and intelligence rather than the energy of martyring other people. If Hamas were fighting outside the heart of civilian populations, they could be seen as taking the fight to the enemy or something to that effect. Right now, they are bringing the fight into the neighborhoods of the civilians they hide among.
It's hard to respect an enemy who goes out of their way to employ terror tactics from the hiding places of civilian housing. Cowardly all the way around. Palestinians need help. Hamas needs removal by any force necessary.

Check definitions and reality for the situation there. This isn't Palestine. This is Hamas.
#1. Gaza is not occupied. It hasn't been occupied since 2005. Israel went through hell with it's own population almost ready to overthrow it in the forceful removal of Jews from their own homes inside the Gaza settlements. When they left, occupation ended. Something worse began, but that came a bit later, after Hamas threw the PLA out of power in 2007 and took Government control of the Gaza Strip with it's population.
#2. They absolutely DO have a military wing and it's bordering on delusional to suggest they don't. Hamas has been and remains a militant organization with one primary focus. As outlined in their own founding charter documents. The total elimination of Israel and everyone in it. This conflict has seen full production missiles being used for the first time in Gaza carrying a range well into the North of Israel. That is a military weapon system. It is not the system of a rag tag rebel group.
If things have moved to the next level, Hamas supplied the step ladder to get there.
#3. What Israel has done in their handling of Palestine is horrible. What Hamas has done to actively bring the war upon themselves and turn the siege of Gaza into a full blown shooting gallery with their population as the ducks, is far worse. They are willing to lose every battle if they win their version of a war. I don't think the population they are willingly putting out for loss fully agrees with that approach and it makes Hamas as terrorist today as they were before taking power of the Gaza Government.
Israel doesn't have to be right for Hamas to be wrong. This is a situation without heroes and no white hats left to wear on either side.
