How about last person standing at a drinking session at the pub, no less ridiculous than accident of birth, and at least everyone gets a chance.
...but then, would 'God save our binge drinker' really work...hmm.

Thing is I tend to agree with the bloodline...just here me out.
None of us in our right minds would do what the Queen does she has been trained from birth to do that job (she does it with grace and decorum you can't diss that) and while yes she wants for nothing she is not free she is a slave to the people.
Also lets face it how many international incidents would we cause by being King lol.
They are the best people for the Job and I think Diana has made sure our future king will not be a bad one because it is also about loving their people and I think they sure do and want the best for us lot.
my tuppence anyhow ;D.

Its next to it..here they are.

To Anacreon in Heaven, where he sat in full glee,
A few sons of harmony sent a petition,
That he their inspirer and patron would be;
When this answer arrived from the jolly old Grecian:
Voice, fiddle, and flute, no longer be mute,
I'll lend you my name and inspire you to boot
And besides I'll instruct you like me to intwine
The myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's vine.

Totally get where you're coming from but I do not share the same sentiments.
I agree, being monarch must be a very controlled job but they don't have to do it. Abdication is a choice, so while any monarch chooses to continue with the role they can not really bleat about it or expect sympathy.

But on-topic, can I ask do you genuinely wish for an invisible force/power/entity/god to protect the UK head of state when you sing the anthem?

Wow, deep lyrics for a drinking song...bit different to what I was singing at a rugby tour in Manchester a few weeks ago lol

Ah...the Welsh, Scottish, and Northern Irish all breathe a sigh of relief!
...or did you mean Britain?

These are all very important prayers.
Especially the one about Marshall Wade.

I don't think God works like that at all.
I watched a good documentary about when we lobbed off Charles I head and people were gob smacked that parliament would go against a king whom was anointed by God.
People thought God would smite them all afterwards but it didn't happen and I think people know that God has not given the Queen anything but the anthem was written a long time ago when Britain was a Christian country.
It's all just history pomp and pageant.
When I sing it I think God is the people of the UK..better way of thinking about it I suppose.

Have you extradited Garry McKinnon yet?

And here is how a British MP makes the US Senate look like complete idiots. Enjoy:-

I still wouldn't sing it even thinking of god as the people.
I've signed government documents pledging to serve the monarchy in my life before now, civil and naval reserve, but it was a lie because I had to do it to follow my path. I pretended that serving the crown was serving the people so that justified signing it in my head.

Got to be honest I don't like any of the national anthems I have heard at football matches and usually end up gazing around with my mouth closed, wishing the ears were as well.

See the point made in this thread and have to admit to totally disagreeing with Boymonkey on this one. I have never thought that the anthem is anything else than to either end something or start it.

If we didn't have the crown we would have a president...we would have to change so much so many laws government agencies etc.
Remember the Queen represents the people so you took an oath to protect the people.
