Man I just saw a horror flick that was quite disturbing, so much that I hesitate to promote it. The flick was so well done though, unpredictable, unique, engaging and of course terrifying. The Den freaked me out with it's realism, both in form and function. The effects were mind blowing, in a grisly fashion. The synopsis:

A young woman studying the habits of webcam chat users from the apparent safety of her apartment witnesses a brutal murder online and is quickly immersed in a nightmare in which she and her loved ones are targeted for the same grisly fate as the first victim.

Let me warn you, if you do not like realistic and intense violence, you might want to skip this one. In retrospect I would probably of chosen not to see this because it seemed to be a typical slasher movie and I am not a fan of gore, but at the same time, after seeing it I feel it is a masterpiece of horror. I just felt it was so well done and was a fresh approach to horror film making that I thought some horror fans here would not want to miss this one. It is very realistic and does not reveal any answers till the end, and it is shocking!

You have been warned about it's intensity, so curl up and prepare to be shocked!!

These flicks never do much for me. I love horror, I don't shy from violence, but I have a hard time considering these types of films "horror." They're more of a continuation of early Italian stuff. Like how Argento started making straight murder movies.

I'll give it a try, but my expectations are low, just because I know my tastes.
Also, these are usually not much fun to watch, which takes what makes slasher movies good away from the equation.

I feel the same way, but my roommate told me the comments about this movie made it seem intriguing. I think you will be surprised at how it is put together. It is unique amongst slasher movies for sure though, and the effects are so real I cringed.
Come back later and post your thoughts.

Thanks,

The most absolutely disgusting semi-horror movie I have ever seen (almost to the end) was "A Serbian Movie." I got to within about 10 minutes of the end, realized where it was going, then stopped it and deleted it. It's probably one of the most vile ideas for a movie I have ever seen. There's a warning on what not to watch if you ever see this movie anywhere on the internet. The Den sounds tame in comparison, although I would have to watch it to give an informed comment.

Cheers - Dave

You are actually talking about A Serbian Film .

If you got that far in it and you didn't watch the final scenes then you missed arguably one of the most crushing endings that films have put out there. As bad as the whole movie was, some of it urban legend at this point and some legit disturbing, the final sequence is so sad.

Have not heard of that, but yea it sounds more like real horror, which I acknowledge there are some disturbing things that go on in our world, and I personally do not care to expose my mind to such things. I can recall some other horror flicks that were just over the top and had no entertainment value aside from gush, gore and profoundly disturbing brutal human behavior.

Wow, just gandered at the Serbian film and yea, stuff like that and Centipede are too over the top for me. Horrifiying? Indeed, but just too gross! haha So yea, The Den will not hold up to that horror mark, it is a bit more novel, but I think fans will still dig it.

I just thought The Den was a refreshing approach and well done for this genre. I am sure some will see it and think it was not scary, but I am not one to flinch and tense up at horror movies because they seem so predictable and cheesy, but this one kept me on edge.

Absolutely.... many of these films are just actually sick, with no point or purpose other than to show mutilation and torture.
I LOVE horror movies but there has to be a point, or some humour or fun... or satire.

Things like August Underground and Serbian Film are just sick and brutal.

Films like Martyrs and Man Bites dog and Inside.... Maybe even Irreversible are brutal and extreme movies but there is some artistic or film making merit, there is something going on other than sheer cruelty and torture and depraved imagery.

I almost watched 'The Den' just last night. I turned it on to see it immediately starts with her talking to a boy on a chat line. I got distracted and turned it off so I'll just have to go back and watch it.

Have you watched 'You're Next' ? I thought it was a refreshing take on slasher films. You know how you always watch these movies and you wanna yell at the characters what you think they should do? Well this film has one character who actually does the right thing for once and fights back.

Horror or horrible films to see if you are a hardcore fan and dont mind gore or really disturbing topics.

Martyr(s): graphic but a bit more, existential than other films. A bit overated in my opinion but worth watching.

Inside: graphic

Haute Tension: Worth watching

A Serbian Film: make sure you are in a really pleasant mood to balance out the sadness you get from watching this.

I Saw the Devil: Asian revenge film..comical and brutal

House of the Devil: 70s style , some graphic violence

Life and Death of a Porno Gang: hard to describe

Megan is Missing: Really bad if you are a parent..I am not and it was really bad at the end.

August Underground: ugh, close to snuff, shorter films.

Antichrist: Supposed to be artistic and their is some okay cinematography at points. Their is also William Dafoes junk and what happens to it.

Yea, the way the movie unfolds, via computer screen seems a bit trivial, but it gets better, and that aspect is what adds to it's uniqueness. I have not seen You're Next but will give it a watch, it looks good, thanks! Yea, the "fighting back" seems to always have room for improvement, and chop their dang head off so they won't come back!! haha

When I saw the legs I turned it off, that was just too vile even for me and I have seen things in the jungles and hot zones which were patently obscene.

Yeah, it's not so much that the graphic parts are too graphic or the story line is overly scary, it's the idea of what they are doing at the end of the movie that is just vile and obscene.

That isn't the toughest scene to see , that happens at the end..
Just a brutal, nihilistic and depressing film.
