You also need to know that many in Iran consider themselves Persians and not exactly Iranians. I'm not sure they'd throw off Islam if they got the chance, but it sure would look different than it does with the mullahs running it. It might revert back to something much closer to what it was under the Shah (Islam that is), and unless I'm remembering incorrectly, in those days, Iran was actually closer to a place like Turkey is or Lebanon used to be.

At least some of the people I've interacted with and my husband has worked with over the years have made it clear that they consider themselves Persians first.

Reread what he said. He's saying that this was created by Saudi Arabia(Muslim country) not Iran(Muslim country). Just because it's a country that is predominantly Islamic doesn't make it the same. Muslim Countries.
