I agree and I would say that many Americans are deficient, our waistbands prove it (except for mine)! Big Pharma makes $ 0.00 profit from multivitamins so I can understand why doctors would not recommend such things. That said, if you're gonna take multivitamins then I would suggest doing some research because as you've said, there are plenty of snake oil salesmen out there.edit on 16-12-2013 by Swills because: (no reason given)
Pardon?

So called Big Pharma are the biggest producers of vitamins by far.
All of the big players have invested heavily over the last few decades in vitamins and supplements (and in some cases even longer ago than that).
Can we call them Big Vit now?
As has been said, if you eat a healthy and balanced diet and providing you have no physiological reason to be deficient in anything. you don't need multi-vitamins.

I never pay attention to any of the latest proclamations from the so-called medial experts.
I have a severe auto-immune disorder. What put it in complete remission were vitamins and supplements, specifically the ones to boost the immune system as well as fight inflammation. I'm a firm believer in them, because the proof is in the pudding.
Don't forget, also, that a lot of the vitamins in our foods (especially the water soluble kinds) leech out of the foods long before they ever get to the store.
Certain drugs will drain your body of vitamins and minerals as well....even cigarette smoking depletes the body of vitamin C.
Our modern food supply and our habits mean that we do need supplements for optimum health. They work great for me, got me off all the pain pills I used to take, so why should I pay attention to what somebody who may not have my best interests at heart says?

I need to take vitamin C I suppose but you get all the varieties you "should" take above all others for XYZ reason (and which to avoid). When is just eating an orange enough - keeping it simple? It's an overwhelming industry.

You take immune enhancing vitamins for an autoimmune disorder? I find this surprising since I've heard this can cause those with these disorders to flare up. Good for you for finding something that works - a success story.
