Bussing children for diversity...would yo do it now?

Driving home from work today listening to Michigan Public Radio, they were talking about programs in the past where they wanted to bus school kids from the suburbs into Detroit and vice-versa to create diversity.

Obviously this wasn't recently but concentrating on driving I didn't hear a date. Late 60's I suspect.
They mentioned the KKK actually blew up 10 busses in Flint MI.

We have all seen the footage of black school kids being escorted into school by the Nat'l guard in ?Miss? and probably agree agree that was good at the time. But my question is...

If you lived in a suburb of Detroit today, or a lot of major cities, would you want your kids bussed into that environment to create diversity?

The 50's or 60's were the big civil rights movements and justly so. but before my time. It seems in 50 or 60 years,the roles have reversed. Before blacks couldn't go into white neighborhoods, now whites can't go into blacks.

It had to be scary for the parents of those black kids that got bussed into white neighborhood schools.we're they using them as political fodder? I doubt it. Just wanted better for their kids.

So I ask...today, in 2013, would you allow any Government entity to tell you that you had to bus your children into the city of Detroits public school system?

Simply no. I was there for the first busing roll-out and it was bad. Spent an hour or more each way on the bus. Racial tensions escalated to violence many times, first hand experience speaking here. I can't imagine shipping kids into more of these potential violent situations.

"there for the first bussing" Like as in Miss or Alabama first time? Were you against it then? and forced too?

Looking back on history it seems like a kinda good thing but then turned into an experiment gone wrong.

this exact thing happened in the late 80's-90's in Knox County, TN.

Collossal failure. Take half the country (I mean real country) kids and bus them into the inner schools, and bring in the same amount of urban kids to the country schools.

Needless to say, NONE in the country were happy, and many in the city were like "good, now they can feel 'it' too", whatever 'it' was. Oh yeah, teen pregnancy, theft/burglaries/vandalism of houses near the country schools increased, and the country kids that went to the city school got picked on by the ghetto racist crack babies (who have no guilt).

Many people found a way for their kids to stay in the area schools. And if the people in the country wanted their kids exposed to the "urban, pants sagging, catcalling of 12yr old girls by groups of older thug wannabe's" crowd they would have sold their small farms and shacked up in the projects.

They forced that busing? That sounds crazy this day and age....I grew up in the boondocks of michigan. rode the school bus for over an hour to get home.

On topic, i dont agree with it. It's been tried many many times to please the PC crowd and its never worked.
Honestly, look into the reason that diversity in schools is wanted. It's to even out the standardized test scores. Predominantly "majorty" schools continuously score higher than "minority" dominant schools. Just look at the scandal going on with Atlanta (USA) schools.

I do live in a Detroit suburb, and I was here when "busing" was the "solution" to giving minorities "opportunities" to "experience" education in the white....(whoops)...suburbs.

You know...better, cleaner, more modern schools and better teachers and learning equipment etc. And the suburban students would get bused into the inner city schools to "even-things-out".
Didnt work....at all.

Looking back now 40 years on that time and the violence experienced? It came down in the end to realizing that every student....everywhere...should have the same opportunities and advantages, equipment etc. But the inner city education systems were in poor shape Millage(money)wise...with a high turnover of teachers and students.

It was just that every school system in every city SHOULD have provided a mix of educational benefits and have a mixture of students of every nationality. It should have been...and here in Detroit now...we are close to that with diversity...but the inner city schools are in dire straights. No matter who attends there.

It was a very rough time back then.

That's not the case at all. City schools get more funding on average than county (rural) schools. I went to the smallest and poorest school district in the state of Pa (Iroquois) and our test scores werent the greatest but they were better than the city (Urban) schools. Basicaly, it boils down to the parents, which trickle down to the children.

I personally know 3 teachers. 2 urban (close friends) and 1 county (whom is my uncle, which started in city schools). They all agree that a lot of the time in the urban environment, the parents also expect the teachers to partially raise their children.

Thanks for your response. Listening to that on NPR today made me think. I would move far and fast before letting my girls get bused into the rape city of Detroit public schools.

But the truth is it is a college town. a lot of blacks in town. Small town but we are not racist.

That isnt the case at all. Anymore. It was during the implementation years of the 1970's-1980's Im reffering. Youre referring to now.

I was in public and Catholic schools in the 50's and 60's. It was a different time that I dont think youre referring to in reference to my reflections of the civil rights movements and busing.

Your school years perhaps were later.

Not true. Im talking about the present.

Since "diversity" took place at the school district i live in, fights are more frequent and the percentage of graduates has trickled down a bit.

Yeah and was forced. We had no choice. Personally I hated it, first for the long unnecessary bus ride (twice a day thank you) second for what I said before. It wasn't a good thing and kids were uprooted from every direction and forced into schools all over the place and far from their parents.
