Attempting to make a vehicle like this surpass the sound barrier when air is present will cause the vehicle to actually outrun the air, creating a sonic-boom and causing who knows what problems to the systems involved. So if they are hoping to reach the speed of sound, it would be wise to do so in a vacuum or at least a partial vacuum of sorts.

It's possible to negate the sonic boom with proper shaping. At least, in an airplane it is. I don't know if this vehicle would be capable of using the required shapes.
