So truth can be construed as fact?

For the time being what we see as truth is the a fact until the truth changes. Then the facts change.

So accordingly, in allot of cases, science fiction eventually turns into science fact. Gene Roddenberry proved that.

"What is the greatest truth"?

Define "great". What do you mean by "great"?

The best alignment to truth that a human can give is honesty. Honesty is telling the truth about what happened, and what you are really thinking and feeling. Honesty is following your nature rather than suppressing it and going against it. In action, it is doing what you want.

That would be defined as the "highest"... Most prevalent...

The one thing which all else must give heed to...

The only real truth, Causality.
Everything else is a lie.
The extent of which, and the lengths that have been taken to hide the truth about everything else is almost incomprehensible.
We know the least about that which effects us most.

What is the cause of Causality?

IF everything has a cause according to Causality... what is the purpose?

Welcome to the forum btw...

Here's my cliche

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.
Winston Churchill

Dear Akragon,

As I've come to expect from you, you have asked a thought-provoking question with a little hook or two to make the discussion more interesting.

Should we start with Aristotle, from his Metaphysics?

To make a true statement is to say of what is, that it is, or to say of what is not, that it is not. To make a false statement is to say of what is not, that it is, or to say of what is, that it is not.

We can follow many paths from that statement, surprisingly, here it does matter what the definition of "is" is.

And how do we know what is? By the pursuit of knowledge. Aristotle saw that as his basic purpose in life.

Aristotle points out that the curiosity for knowledge, and the curiosity of knowledge is the essence of philosophy itself. "For it was their curiosity that first led men to philosophize and that still leads them." Aristotle believes that all philosophers try to overcome ignorance, and pursue knowledge for its own sake and not merely for the practical utility of it.

library.thinkquest.org...

As you know, the basic principles of right behavior can be seen in nearly all societies throughout time. If we give the vote to our ancestors, the consensus would be that it is true that there is a (Natural law? First principle? Tao? Conscience?) that has been given to all men.

I'm not sure that that is the answer you want, but it could be the start of an extraordinarily enlightening discussion. Thanks a lot for bringing it up, and for bringing your unique style to the discussion.

With respect,

Thank you.

Actually, causality is the effect of initial creation.
Who, how, & why creation began isn't our forte', we are however bound and subjected to it.
Everything else, thought upon by much greater minds than ours, over countless generations, is a lie.
It's a lie, because in order to maintain power, the truth can never be made public.
People know it, but it's easily dismissed as rhetoric or some crazy conspiracy.
Those minds have all the resources and methods of recording information which is meticulous to the n'th degree, as well as all the time in the world to do so,
While we spend our lifetime trying to discover a truth, those minds already know it, and devote many individuals over many lifetimes to corrupt every facet of our understanding.
Even if you could see the lies for what they are, they're as inescapable as causality itself.
The funny thing is the truth is hidden in plain site and it's far easier to believe deception when it's all you know.

This is the purpose of rational philosophical discussion... To peel away the layers of the matter to find the absolute... Just as the Philosophers stone turns lead to gold... We remove the useless matter to reveal our own treasure... Yet each mans treasure is different...

I don't think I need to quote Jesus here... You know what verse im referring to

I don't mean to toot my own horn (really, I hate it), but I think the most profound truth we can recognize is the fact that we all long to know the truth. Nothing beyond that simple statement need more be said. Can we ever find truth? Doesn't matter. The fact is, we long for it, we yearn for it, we itch for it. Meaning and truth our intrinsic foci of human nature, and not a single conscious functioning human being doesn't in same way long for truth.

The paradox of this statement makes it unfalsifiable: even if you deny the existence of truth, you have made a declarative statement about truth, which in itself partakes of the concept, "truth".

Therefore, I think the greatest most blatant truth is the one implied in the question "what is the greatest truth". The greatest truth is that we ask ourselves "whats true", or more generally, how we long to know the truth.

I win!!!

that question is easy...

We're here to learn.... for IF we already knew what we have not yet learned...

We wouldn't be here to begin with

Thanks for your reply brother

Would the greatest truth equate to the "Meaning Of Life"?

I think that is the ultimate search for the truth.

Or is it something we shall never know in this existance?

The truth is we are hanging in space by an invisible magnetic force which could stop at any minute. When it does we won't even know it, gravity and air pressure will be gone, we will have three seconds to live before our heads swell like a balloon and combustion causes our heads to explode, it won't matter if you are in a plane, deep underground, stuck in a train tunnel or whatever, we will cease to exist and the remains of what we call Earth will adjust it's orbit and take on a new role, possibly giving way to a new form of life.

Yes... Yet the meaning of life is different to each life...

So the greater question becomes... what is the meaning of the human condition?

that is what we are doing, or most of us... That is not why we are doing it

its because we are here to do it..

Dear davesmart,

I'm so sorrry.
You mean I've done this before? By the time I hit "reply" I'm sure you'll have it figured out. I admit it takes one or two re-readings, but once you get it in your head, it's there forever. Now whether that's a good thing, I can't tell you. After all, Akragon has told us we have our own individual truths. Perhaps it would help if you declared that statement to be false. In which case, you'd have.

To make a true statement is not to say of what is, that it is, or to say of what is not, that it is not. To make a false statement is not to say of what is not, that it is, or to say of what is, that it is not.

There, better now?
(Sometimes, I crack myself up.)

As far as sanity goes, I can't tell you how many years I've been trying to get my sanity certificate. Every six months I ask my therapist and he says "Not yet." So, welcome to the club.

With respect,
Charles1952

We exist to progress... Learning is part of that progression...

but what we do not know... what is the end of said progression... IF there is an end.

New here, but been reading for years.
Intriguing.
Besides my previous thoughts, I've also thought truth is subject to interpretation.
(MIB) Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow. (MIB)
I may find truth in my thoughts, so much so that I believe them, and even though I'm willing to listen to other sides, I'd still have a hard time discounting what I believe to be true, not just because I believe it, but because every time I try to prove myself wrong, I can't. I keep finding things that inexorable lead me back to the same conclusions.
If someone believes wholeheartedly that I'm incorrect, so much so, they feel the same way I do, but opposite notions, does it make their beliefs false? One side is definitely the correct opinion, and one is not, but until the answers unequivocally come to light, no one can say for certain.
The good thing about disagreements though, is that they provide an opportunity for different perspective, opinions, and challenges of one's notions of truth.
