Obama Tells Graduating Class To Reject The Voices Of Those Who Question The Government's Tyranny

When I first came across this I thought the title had to be bunk or over exaggerated, but once I read the transcript and watched the video I couldn't believe what I had just heard.

I want to point out that this is not a jab at Obama or any political party in general but is directed to all governments who function the way ours do. I am not American and people say American politics should not concern me but these politics and policies do affect me so I feel I have the right to voice my concern. I also have no problem admitting that I feel the exact same way about my elected officials, they cannot be trusted here in Canada either. To have anyone in a position such as Obama to say "Just trust us" is just wrong in my opinion.

I will never dismiss the tyranny of these war criminals.

Unfortunately, you’ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems. Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They’ll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices. Because what they suggest is that our brave, and creative, and unique experiment in self-rule is somehow just a sham with which we can’t be trusted.

We have never been a people who place all our faith in government to solve our problems. We shouldn’t want to. But we don’t think the government is the source of all our problems, either. Because we understand that this democracy is ours. And as citizens, we understand that it’s not about what America can do for us, it’s about what can be done by us, together, through the hard and frustrating but absolutely necessary work of self-government. And class of 2013, you have to be involved in that process.

I am certain that there will be mixed reactions to this speech and the context of it. My opinion of it is that it's almost as he is trying to make sound as if it is YOUR fault for the way things are and not the government's. Also, I believe he is subtly taking a jab at those "crazy conspiracy theorist nut jobs" that warn you about the government and their misdeeds.

There is a reason why people have developed certain opinions such as the ones Obama mentions, and I believe it is wrong of him to pressure this crowd of graduates to dismiss these warnings.

He knew exactly what he was doing. This administration has been obsessed with the idea that they're losing the "information war" (Hillary's words) from the start. By which, of course, they mean that they hear a nation vomiting at the propaganda they think we should find so tasty. It scares them. Scares the living **** out of them. They've been trying to find ways to counteract it (as witness the new crop of Statists spewing their drivel on this very site).

With any luck, this current crop of graduates--when they get out into the world and find out what scraps have been left for them--will be the ones to turn around and shove it up their butts. Hopefully with a gleeful vengeance....

Yeah I heard about that yesterday. Telling people to trust the government 100% is insane. I'm sure some people in our government aren't tyrannical or power hungry. But blindly listening or following anybody is a recipe for disaster.

These people that take spots of power are not stupid people. Why do you think the more educated people and wealthy take the better jobs/positions? Were no different then 2000 years ago. The educated, and mostly rich are the ones who take higher up positions. These people usually are very determined and motivated. And for the most part, know how to manipulate people.

Once a few bad people get into position, it can start infesting. Bribes, and threats can keep good-hearted officials at bay. And of course the promise of power can corrupt almost anyone.

History repeats itself, and it seems like the way our governments operate, are still for the most part the same as they were years ago; greedy and corrupt.

Not surprised. The Govt owns their student loan debt, so telling them not to trust anyone but Govt makes sense.

Man, I am scared for the new crops of College Grads. Deep in debt to the Govt, little to no job prospects because of a bad economy and now the Tyrant 0bama telling them to trust no one but the Govt.

Well he is reiterating Kennedy's words more or less. Whether he uses those words to encourage or stifle, is possibly debatable, I would go with encourage.

Obama is the voice of the establishment. I wonder how many hippies and radicals from the 1960s and early 1970s feel about a liberal president whose a complete tool?

Sounds to me like the opposite to Reagans "Government is the problem" Speech!

Not that I believe that Government is the problem just out of control Government like we are seeing!

Obama's right again. Those 'who question tyranny' are oft times only racist malcontents who don't like Obama for ONLY one reason. So, in attampt to legitamize their racism, they claim TYRANNY, TYRANNY, TYRANNY! Just a bunch of whining losers who can't handle the fact that society is changing, (whether they like it or not); that it's not 1955 anymore; that White America is fading. These idiotic cries of warning are just acts of desperation. Soon we'll all just laugh at these poor fools, the way laugh at those who think the earth is flat. Rave On!

Why go on and on about racism, in a sarcastic manner? Obama's speech had nothing to do with racism. Also, it had very little to do with him, either. Whether or not he had malicious intent and deceptive undertones in his speech is up for debate, but the speech wasn't about trusting HIM. It was about trusting our government, which is an extension of OURSELVES (I DONT believe that, I don't even believe this is a democracy like so many claim, I'm just saying what HIS speech was about).


I get it. You don't like Obama. Join the club. However, making statements like these serves nobody, it helps none. You just go on your own soapbox, ranting about racism and obama....and not really understanding the speech at all because you simply dislike Obama too much to even attempt to understand what the speech was really about/aimed at.

I disagree, Obama is definitely wrong...again

(not that what he says matters, he is just a puppet who does what he is told).

Your whole logic is fawed, you say that they are screaming TYRANNY against Obama because he is black due to their racism. I have a news flash for you, people were suspicious of the government well before Obama was even born. Also, I know many black Americans who dislike Obama and his policies and the rest of the government, does that make them racist as well?

To put things into perspective, my elected leader Stephen Harper is white just like me, and I do not like him or trust his government, am I also a racist?

So I guess according to you we are a bunch of whiney, idiotic, foolish, losers for the simple fact that we question the tyranny that our governments emit?

It's funny, I completely disagree with the first paragraph, but comply agree with the second.

All he's really saying in the second part of that quote is take responsibility for your destiny. He's saying if you want things to be different it's up to you to change them. Get involved. That should be applauded and encouraged. Part of the problem is people expect the government to run properly on it's own or be run by the honor system. And then when it doesn't, we blame them instead of ourselves for not using our power. I always tell people I talk to that complain about government what do they do on a daily basis to change it other than complain on the internet. You usually get a dumb look. And simply voting on election day isn't being a part of the process. Don't expect government to be different if we, as a collective citizenry, aren't making it and forcing it to be different.

Hello Supermarket. I hope you're doing well. I appreciate your thgoughts regarding my post. I actually DO like Obama. You may be right, regarding my draging things into my response that weren't specifically mentioned in the original post. But I think this type of post is similar to other anti-Obama posts that sensationalize out-of-context examples of Obama-lead 'Tyranny'. Personally, I think that the reason these folks continue to post crap like this is to rouse the rabble. That's their target audience, in my opinion. I'm sick of it, personally. Instead of yelling about this kind of crap, get to work fixing the real problems in this country - the problems that diversions like this keep us from correcting. IMO.
