It looks like all viruses evolve via recombination. In flu the "point mutations" are largely just recycled polymorphisms.

Viruses are the ultimate recyclers. The spend most of their time just copying and pasting. If it works, why fix it? They just move pieces of genes around.

The discussion between myself and engineer has to do with interkingdom cross-over, my main example is bacteria/plants with separate reference to prions.
