H5N1 bird flu is virulent, deadly and set to go epidemic world wide. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a pandemic alert in February 2003, and the CDC routinely issues Enhanced Level Alerts for H5N1. An H5N1 vaccine was developed by April 2003 at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in the USA. This fall, the H5N1 vaccine was provided to top level White House personnel, but the vaccines Bush is pushing to ordinary Americans do not immunize against H5N1 bird flu.

A happy coincidence? Excuse me? No one has any natural immunity to H5N1 bird flu. It’s a new strain that kills 70% of the people it infects, and it’s highly contagious. But the H5N1 vaccine is not included in the vaccines available to the American public? This is not a forgiveable oversight. “Up to one billion people could die around the whole world in six months,” says Dmitry Lvov, head of the Russian Virology Institute, “about 700,000 in the USA.”

Adding insult to injury, vaccine distributors and flu clinics in the USA are price-gouging across the board – for the wrong vaccine. In fact, drug manufacturers obviously are dumping old stock, with Bush’s blessing, if not his assistance.

The appearance of H5N1 bird flu is not a surprise. Scientists have been tracking its evolution since 1980 – and warning governments about it. H5N1 and other new flu strains are associated with a human disease called fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD). FMD first was acknowledged officially in 1938, in the USA. When researcher Dr. LM Julian discovered FMD in domestic turkeys in 1980, also in the USA, scientists knew the writing was on the wall.

Certain lines of research suggest that the 1918 ‘Spanish’ flu epidemic resulted from FMD’s first appearance, in turn linked to an accidental contamination of the world’s first mass vaccinations provided to American soldiers in World War I.

By 1996, FMD had spread to quail in Japan reported Drs. Braga, Tanaka and associates. By 1997, H5N1 bird flu appeared in humans. Since then, it has been bouncing back and forth between people and animals, mutating and becoming more virulent and contagious with each go round. By 2001, Dr. de Paiva of Brazil reported FMD pathology in avian reovirus – and helped explain how the disease mutates, evolves, and spreads.

Every epidemiologist in the world was screaming, “FIRE!” for the past 4 years. The WHO, the CDC, the Mayo Clinic – all sent urgent warnings. But the only way to make a killing was by dumping old stock. From the Enron fiasco to Halliburton, Iraq, and now the flu fiasco – Bush takes care of his corporate sponsors and buddies, and puts American lives on the line for profit.

All supervisors are judged by their results – from the night manager at the 7-11 to the Commander-in-Chief of the United States. Judging by the results of Bush’s decisions, he is at best incompetent and at worst, criminal.

Well, Soficrow in another thread claimed that Bush was preventing research into developing medical treatments from stem cells, which is also untrue.

Soficrow, you need to read the articles you cite more carefully. "[H]umans appear to become infected through contact with chickens and other birds." "We've been lucky twice with H5N1--once in 1997 and once so far during this current outbreak--in not experiencing human-to-human transmission."

It isn't clear yet that H5N1 can spread from human to human, although there may be a recent case in Thailand. But the opening paragraph of your post makes it appear that the president is deliberately concealing a killer disease from the American public.

I agree that H5N1 bears close watching, and it has the potential to be very dangerous. But the president isn't stopping anything. In fact, given the amount of human testing that has to be done after a new vaccine is developed, this one seems like it's being fast-tracked. From the St. Jude press release from last April:

Webby's laboratory has sent the seed H5N1 vaccine to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and the World Influenza Center in London for further testing, in preparation for initial Phase I and Phase II trials in humans. "It's important to move right along with these trials in case the virus begins spreading from person to person," Webster says.


Then, in March of this year, the WHO issued this release:

World Health Organization (WHO) experts said Monday a human vaccine for H5N1 bird flu will be available in six months.

Dr. Robert Webster, bird flu expert from the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Laboratory on Influenza, said at a press conference that a human vaccine for the H5N1 bird flu virus is being studied and is expected to be available in six months' time.

As told by Webster, the vaccine is devised by using the technology of reverse genetics and is now ready for testing on humans. Once it is proved to be safe and effective in protecting human from H5N1 virus, the vaccine will be released for the public.


Let's see. Six months from March is...September. And September 21, 2004, the Dept. of Health & Human Services issued this press release:

HHS Orders Avian Flu Vaccine Doses As Preventive Measure

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced today the awarding of a contract to Aventis Pasteur Inc. to manufacture and store 2 million doses of avian influenza H5N1 vaccine, an important initial acquisition to better prepare the nation for an influenza pandemic.

The vaccine that is being made is designed to match the H5N1 influenza virus that has killed 29 people in Thailand and Vietnam this year. If a pandemic of avian influenza virus H5N1 occurred in humans, the new vaccine would be used to protect laboratory workers, public health personnel, and, if needed, the general public.

"This is an important first step toward preparing our nation to respond to a pandemic influenza outbreak," Secretary Thompson said. "The reemergence of the avian flu in Asia this year is another sign that we have to develop and produce vaccines against the threat of a pandemic flu. The United States is the first nation to undertake this preventive measure on this scale."

The amount of the contract is nearly $13 million. The purchase of the new vaccine follows Secretary Thompson's announcement last month of the National Pandemic Influenza Response and Preparedness Plan, which outlines a coordinated national strategy to prepare for and respond to an influenza pandemic. In fact, avian flu H5N1 does NOT share the H3 antigen - it's an H5 antigen - so the strains targeted by US vaccines are the WRONG strains - which Cowley refrains from pointing out. The "anticipated strain" this year is the avian flu H5N1 virus - and is NOT included in the vaccines Bush now is pushing to ordinary Americans.

FYI - The two most dangerous flu strains are H5 and H7 strains - partly because they tend to be virulent, but also because it is very difficult to manufacture the vaccines. IMPORTANT UPDATE:

The World Health Organization just called an unprecedented world summit for November 11 to deal with the H5V1 avian flu pandemic threat. Vaccines now available in the USA do not immunize for H5N1 avian flu. The size of the American population and the mobility of the nation's citizen's makes the USA particularly susceptible to contagious spread.

H5N1 avian flu has infected poultry flocks across much of Southeast Asia this year and also infected 44 people, killing 32 of them.

"If we continue as we are now, there will be no vaccine available, let alone antivirals, when the next pandemic starts," Stohr said."

...Guess what? It's not treatable. The disease causes stem cell mutations in connective tissue inside the blood and lymph vessel walls - then it spreads by cell-cell contact to smooth muscle. Also by cell-cell contact, it spreads to other connective tissue - in bone, joints, and more.

I waited for treatment - but the disease is now systemic and too widespread in my body to benefit from surgery. AFTER I cleaned out my savings, pensions and everything and went bankrupt, I found support on the Net and started researching FMD with a vengeance. ...I am only 52, a single mother with a 14-year-old daughter. I am too young to be disabled; I want to live and produce. But I can't, and you will support me because you will not support solutions.

....One of the first things I discovered is that FMD is epidemic in the USA - new cases are reported at an incidence rate of 1.7% per year, 1.1% diagnosed in autopsy. That translates to an average of 7,000 new cases in Americans diagnosed in autopsy every single DAY.

So do I have an agenda? You betcha. I want everyone to know about this disease - that it's transmitted through our food and water - and that its progression is radically speeded by drugs that shut down immune response and also, by contaminants in our food air and water.

I want everyone to know FMD is epidemic but invisible - and it can be prevented. But it's not, because letting it spread is just too profitable.

....So there you have it. My motivation and my agenda.

From the top - Bush dropped the ball. No way around it.

WHO declared the first pandemic alert in February of 2003. H5N1 avian flu was flagged as the coming scourge. The H5N1 vaccine was developed by April of 2003.

Bush decided to have ONE company, Chiron, manufacture the H5N1 vaccine for the USA. There were production problems. Bush let it slide. In September of 2004, the British warned Bush that the production problems were insurmountable. Bush ordered 2 million doses from Aventis-Pasteur - but did not seek to replace the order elsewhere.

When the Brits closed down the Chiron plant in October and refused to release the contaminated vaccines, Bush let drug companies push old vaccine stocks in America - at premium prices.

Now, partly because of the US crisis created by Bush's incompetence, the WHO has called an emergency summit on the coming flu pandemic - something that has never happened before. (That's what "unprecedented" means - never happened before.)
