It looks like USGS has revised the mag 8.0 depth back down to 28.7 km.
Still shows a very shallow thrust-fault mechanism.

for the kiwis out there,

#TsunamiAdvisory2

1626 hours Wednesday 6 February 2013

The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) is advising New Zealand coastal communities that a tsunami is possible following a magnitude 8.0 earthquake near the Santa Cruz Islands (northern Vanuatu) at 14:12 New Zealand Time (NZDT) today.

The Ministry is assessing the severity of a possible threat to New Zealand.

A tsunami has been generated, and the first wave may arrive in New Zealand in the areas around North Cape at approximately between 1800 and 1900 hours today.

People in coastal areas should:
Stay off beaches
Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)
Do not go sightseeing
Share this information with family, neighbours and friends
Listen to the radio/TV for further assessment and updates
Follow instructions of their local Civil Defence authorities.

www.civildefence.govt.nz...

pass this info out to other kiwis and your friends

any word on aussie ATS members along the coast
?

This is the Iris Global Quake map as of Feb, 6 03:43 Universal Time. I know there are real time updating versions but I am posting this for the sake of historical reference in case more happens and we all want to see what it looked like now, before more is added.

(IRIS Seismic Monitor Display)

Lets hope for the sake of all in the South Pacific, this is as transient an event as the numerous ones which have come before it. It's BIG....but it's in an area that knows big quakes as a regular thing. The South Pacific is a VERY active place and always has been. On the other hand, I looked at the Iris map and caught my breath. There are red circles (Quakes today) all over the place and these aren't all the little bitty ones that are common on any given day.

Maybe nothing....and I hope so. Maybe something...in which case, this map in a static form may be useful to refer to.

everything looks like it wasn't "too bad".

New Zealand and Australia are in the clear it seems.

www.abc.net.au...

A magnitude 8.0 earthquake off Solomon Islands has generated a tsunami and wiped out three villages on the Santa Cruz islands.

Tsunami warnings were issued for areas in the South Pacific following the quake, but they have now been cancelled.

2.55pm: The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has cancelled its warning and watch alerts for all areas.

2:49pm: The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says an 11 centimetre, non-destructive tsunami wave has hit Vanuatu.

It says a wave will also hit PNG, but will be non-destructive.

Yes it wiped out 3 villages but it could have been much worst.
