Venezuela prison riot 'kills many'

www.bbc.co.uk

The riot was triggered when local media broadcast news that soldiers had been sent to Uribana prison in Barquisimeto to search for weapons....

The director of Barquisimeto hospital, put the death toll at 54, Venezuela's Clarin newspaper reported.
Opposition leader Henrique Capriles blamed the violence on "incompetent and irresponsible government"....

Sarah Grainger in Caracas says it appears that prisoners who had heard about the search in advance from news reports were waiting for the National Guard

Prison riot with a death toll of 54 and 90 injured who is to blame?

This report brings up some interesting questions. This is one of Venezuelas most violent prisons. It makes sense that from time to time they may want to go in and remove the contraband weapons. So far so good.

When the team arrived to carry out this objective a riot broke out. It turns out the prisoners were fully aware of the team coming and of their intentions prior to the team even getting into the prison because they saw it on T.V.

The opposition leader then blames the violence on the "incompetence and irresponsible government"

The mistakes were obvious. Who tells the press ahead of time? Who in the press then decides to blurt it out before it happens to the prisoners themselves? This is simply not what one does when doing a shake down at all, it is supposed to be a surprise visit.

My questions are, Was this due to a mistake or was it done purposely? If it was done purposely, could it have been the opposition attempting a fast one so they could blame the government? or was it just bad timing on the part of the News station?

I think its stupid guards, in places like that they get paid to look the other way. Never mind the fact that they may just end up catching the bullet or blade that they helped smuggle in.

In those kind of prisons there arent guards on the inside. They are outside to make so no one gets out.

Im sorry I don't get it, for real. Is that some sort of a joke? Every prison has guards on the outside to stop people from getting out,

Yeah, or how about the people working at the prison that didn't see it on t.v. and think "hmm the prisoners are probably watching this?" or "hmm if this is going to be on t.v. maybe we should block the prisoners from seeing it?"

Sucks that people died and were hurt, but it the media, and prison were to blame as much as the prisoners.

From any places in the world I never would want to be in a Venezuelan prison.

It is worst than death penalty.

Here is a video I will not embed because it is 18 years content although it is a cartoon it shows clearly how it is
to be there in prison: www.youtube.com...

Venezuela is a land without human rights.

Every South American Prison is a death trap. The guards are corrupt and gangs rule the inside. You have to pay some gangster just for a bunk once in. Food? Better have money and connections or you will be forced to fight for scraps. God help you if you come from America.... These gangs are armed to the teeth and gunfights between blocks (opposing gangs) are not uncommon inside the prison. Some of these prisons getting raped by the guards is your welcome briefing.....

Go to south America you better stay on the high road or you may not live through the mistake.

Many prisons in Venezuela like Uribana. La Planta etc dont have guards inside they are more like walled off little criminal cities. The inmates run their own little worlds. They even hold gladiator style matches where the men slash each other to death with knives.
