My son needs help with verb, helping verb, and linking verb in this sentence:

"Jeff and I are best friends"

Apparently his mother and I cannot figure it out. Isn't are all 3 of them? He has other sentences that have all 3, but this one is confusing to us all.

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't understand what you are asking, can you explain it a little better at all?

I believe the verb is "are," the linking verb is "best" ... perhaps "are" acts as the helping verb as well? I'm not sure, I agree this is kind of confusing. =\

In this case, as in almost every case with the verb "is" or "are", it is a linking verb. It connects the subject with a description of the subject.

So is that all we have in this sentence?

Is best anything? I know an adjective, but I want to understand so I can help my son understand also. Did they give us a trick question here?
