You sound like you believe the disputed nature of Taiwan as territory could result in some super devastating quake. ???
I speak of signs, and when signs are too many ,time is compressing to release energy,in human terms and natural phenomena.

Curious they say 6.2 when the average of the magnitudes in the phase data is 6.09 (6.1 rounded) which is the value EMSC have.

Update: Now 6.1 Mwc on USGS (Mwc just tc be different!)

What would be really fascinating - and I don't have the technology to do it - is a 3D map of that.

I may know someone who does have the capability. I will ask.

The last Geophysical week - ending 19th July - for the first time since I started these, saw the global number of calculated Mag 5 quakes fall below 5000.

The Orange trace shows a steady fall in global mag 5 throughout the period (from last December) to now and the average energy of each quake going up, something I cannot get my head round as it is not a logical state of affairs as I have pointed out on the thread before.

Bear in mind that this is Mag 4.4 quakes upwards that when multiplied by a factor to bring them to ~Mw, if they are not, fall into the Mag 5 to 5.99 group.

I am not sure I can explain the increased average energy but, I had an idea about the falling numbers. What it may be, and I will confirm this later, is the globe settling down after the Japan 9.1 Mw. The reason I say this is because I have started at 2002 and only got 6 months in so far, but the average number of converted quakes is ~4600. IF there is a surge after Banda Aceh that then falls back and is renewed after Japan we have the solution.

The energy may be because the unsettled state produces more in the lower bands and thus the average would climb as there were fewer of these.

Don't expect a quick result as it takes a lot of time to do this, and I am struggling to keep up the geophysical reports in a timely manner, but I will get the result eventually.

That's more cryptic than I can begin to guess about.

I do believe that time is being compressed . . . I do believe that humans contribute to traumas or God's deliverance and help . . . one way or another . . . by their heart values and behaviors.

How this will influence the scheduled increase in quakes remains to be seen, imho.

I just believe that at some point, the increase will begin or be more obvious or more dramatic . . . and more devastating.

I was curious as to the frequency, and larger magnitude quakes for the South Sandwich islands. Only two prior to this years 7.3.....interesting!!

All I could find was is in the linky poo below....

www.world-earthquakes.com...

This looks like a really new area of potentially huge quakes!!

I can not help but to think of the scripture in the Bible that refers to increased earthquake activity in diverse places.......It's referring to the last days; right before HIS coming!!

The Mayor's office is THE most important landmark around for 46.5 miles!
The Mayor has connections at USGS.
Okay, maybe there is a seismograph in the Mayor's office!

took a while to find the time and pull it all together, but here is the first 5 days anyway.
Cook Strait Series 18-21/07/2013+ aftershocks
also available on eqarchives as a post.
5 interactive maps
6 graphs
2 models
and some words

not sure if the 6.5 was dextral or sinistral strike-slip, I think it was dextral myself, based on the overall seismic makeup of NZ.

I'll probably run it out to 7 days.

Sorry to burst your doom bubble with regard to the South Sandwich Islands but actually Mag 6+ earthquakes are not that infrequent.

This map shows all the Mag 6+ quakes since 1970, of which 5 are Mag 7+

Unfortunately many web sites do not either tell you the whole story and/or give you sufficient information so you might have to put the bible back by the bedside for a few years longer as I don't think this is one of the diverse places.

A circular search of the Centennial Catalog using the data from that which I have stored gives 105 result since 1900. I was going to list them here but it would be spread over three posts due to the limitations on this site. 105 quakes is not that many that we cannot adequately list them surely?!

I have created a page on my own blog for them and added the most recent from ANSS and USGS.

Total quakes found from 1900 t0 2013 = 138

But the doom bubble is so......bubbly!

Thank you for the correction. I thought it odd to have such few quakes, and only dug for it for 30 seconds

hmm pretty insteresting, that I just had the feeling, that the big tokyo quake will happen soon. I have no idea why but I just wanted to post my feeling here, even though I am pretty sure nothing will happen...
but interesting how somebody else has the feeling

"The essence of the earthquake science is to prevent the lost of human lives."

Even if so no one will do anything to prevent loss of life, because no day, location or hour has been given.

But even with those above ,still no power to save human lives, which is the essence of the earthquake science.

as soon as I read your post I thought "this is incorrect" having plotted 103 years of mag 7's I knew for sure this was not the case.
P'man has put you straight I see

That is frustrating having to use several catalog's to get the full timeline eh.
I see you didn't particularly mention the Mag 8.0 of 27/06/1929, which puts the South Sandwich Islands Regions in the Major League when it comes to quakes of significance.
I took your data and processed it down to 7+ and created the map below and the 113 year timeline.
I have been thinking of breaking down the Significant Earthquakes project into Regions, now I have a template

edit2: Done, added 2
, now I'm hungry reading about the South Sandwich Islands a bacon-butty sounds like good for breakfast
