Oh, man.
You just had to go and give The Singularity more data for processing.

Half kidding... and only half...

You may find this interesting, in the early '90s I was an engineer with one of the largest semiconductor companies in the world (I would rather not name them) I worked on a project where I made parts for the company to experiment with Cold Fusion so when people were calling the guys who say they discovered it 'quacks and liars; our company took it very serious, I just made the device and wasn't cleared for experiments. A co-worker there told me there was an entire department that was working on artificial intelligence! This was quite awhile ago so I;m sure they have made some advancement since then!

Murphy's law does not take a break for it is always in effect.

What if robotics is the next step of natural selection?
Trans-humanism could classify as a form of evolution in a way.

Or maybe it's part of the human zeitgeist to leave behind a robot army scouring the galaxy on our behalf?

I imagine we would integrate with AI and co-exist more so then become exterminated.

the Co-Dependence could only be broken by us..
we would betray their trust igniting the war, that's really the only way.

........I am almost speechless here. That "cheetah" is scary stuff! Slayer.....drat it!....you made me create a whole new bookmark folder; calling the "OFF", for oh **** file.

A few years back, I read an article where the Japanese (I think) made a learning computer system, and actually called it Skynet. Then it vanished from online. Anyone seen that?

Of course, as we all type in this thread, they are probably collecting the data, so they know who is a threat.....

thought people might like to see "Jules"

if they actually perfected a complete human looking AI would we actually be able to tell the difference and would they tell us ?

Pretty scary topic really....we know they can grow skin in the lab, it's already being used to test cosmetics..not sure what kind of system would need to be in place to keep it alive / regenerating .. but I'm thinking it's only a matter of time.

Robots/computers have assumed positions of skilled labor.

They fly the friendly skies for the pilots who push their buttons. There was even a crash attributed to the fact that the pilots did not have the necessary skills to right the aircraft because they'd grown so used to the computer flying the plane. It wasn't a major airline or even a US airline.

We ARE already there.

This kind of tech is black budget stuff. There's no way the military would admit to having advanced AI. BB is the only way to pay for something you want to KEEP classified.

Funny you should bring this up. Man's greatest accomplicment, created man is his own image using AI. We have web bots running around grathing info right now doing whatever they are programmed to do/find.
We have aircraft that you can fly by remote control, and computers who are almost better then our brains and some are! You are asking what would be the tipping point for an AI to realise itself, become alive.
Would that mean a new speices, and just what would it want other then to live period! Power packs would not be the issue since it would be able to downsize a nuck to the size of a battery and have the braines to do it!
Or it becomes better then we are, realizing what is already distroyed and the root cause of such is us! For now they work for us, someday we might have to work for them! Hopefully it would be for the best for both onlt take it from man to know the term POWER and we just might find ourselves at number 2.

Ahhh! Now someone here who is in a similar situation
in terms of the state-of-the-art in A.I (Artificial Intelligence)

1) Weak A.I. - A series of rule-based expert systems composed
of MANY if-then-else statements aggregated on a group-basis to
form a TASK-SPECIFIC human intelligence enhancement system.

The usual target applications include consumer credit evaluation,
semi-autonomous or fully autonomous stock trading, electronic
circuit routing and evaluation and other types of applications
that can ENHANCE, rather than replace, human intelligence.

If I was a building structural engineer and I have only two weeks
to evaluate the structural integrity of an entire 40 story office tower
including wind loads, weight distribution, and energy efficiency,
a building engineering, a Weak A.I. system could be real handy.

While I wouldn't trust it completely, for certain tasks
I would use it for the large number of initial engineering and
math evaluations and do the final confirmation work myself.

Weak A.I. won't replace the human mind but for delegating
the boring work to, I'd use it in a heartbeat!

Weak A.I. is mostly ENTIRELY done in software using
simple comparisons such as:

if x > y then Do_Z;
if a = b then Do_NOT_Do_C;
if n < 1.0 then Do_This else Do_That;

This type of system is NOT A.I, but rather a subject-specific
EXPERT SYSTEM. -- Not Really a threat To Us unless
used in autonomous targeting and missile firing control systems!

2) Strong A.I. - This is a whole different beast altogether since
there is a REQUIREMENT for adequate basic computing
hardware to run the basic software infrastructure. And much like
our own human hardware (the brain), demonstrable sentience
and conciousness is not possible without powerful hardware.

The human mind REQUIRES about 100 PetaFlops of computer
horsepower (i.e. 100 Quadrillion Floating Point Operations Per
Second) for the neural net processing that it does.

The total aggregate numbers of connections and electrical
signal transfer rate has been ESTIMATED to be this
100 PetaFlop processing power count.

The human mind is a series of organically-based
electrical traces that block or allow the transmission
of potassium and sodium ions to and from the nearest
neural tube (axions). This forms the basis of simple
digital signal processing which stores and forwards
the electrical potentials of those ions such that
signals to the extremities can be sent to and fro
for sensory input and mobile/dexterous output purposes.

The level of electrical potential that is allowed to pass
through or be blocked allows our higher level functions
to grade the sensitivity of electrical input from those extremities
which causes a feedback loop that then allows us to make minute
adjustments to allow us fine dexterity and high mobility.

At the brain-level, we have an organic neural net which
uses trillions of connections that route and switch electrical
signals between specialized regions of the brain that deal with
specific decision making tasks that are in fact electrically-based
if-then-else comparisons that are grouped together to form
the vast decision making capability we humans take for granted.

ONLY NOW do humans have the computer hardware capable
of EMULATING that organic neural net using techniques such
as multi-state boolean logic (YES/NO/MAYBE or More Likely,
Less Likely) that is run at GIGAHERTZ speeds on powerful
supercomputers.

By combining MANY if-then-else rules into task-specific groups
(i.e. if item is octagon-shaped and is red and is on right then STOP CAR)
we can create an extremely large decision tree that will EMULATE
how humans evaluate their local environments. Attach those
huge software-based if-then-else decision trees to cameras,
microphone and robotic limbs and there ISN'T ANYTHING
SUCH A SYSTEM CAN'T DO!

The physical architecture that will give rise to TRUE STRONG A.I.
is called Whole Brain Emulation. By literally emulating the electrical
storage ability and neural connection structure of a simulated brain
on a molecular basis, but running that simulation at GIGAHERTZ SPEEDS
NOW we can get the full functionality of our executive decision-making abilities.

And since IBM makes Blue Gene/Q supercomputers that run at 10 Petaflops,
one only needs about 1.5 billion dollars to network 10 or 20 of them
to allow software to emulate the horsepower of ONE human brain.
That's one mighty expensive PHD level engineer! I do admit that
it can be run 24/7/365 for any commercial or enginnering tasks
you'd like performed!

Expensive BUT doable! Handy for Encryption Code Breaking Tasks
or Super Secret Enginnering-related tasks for government agencies
that have DEEP POCKETS (i.e. NSA, DARPA, DIA, NRO, etc)

BUT because of recent advanced in OPTO-ELECTRONICS,
I can run a 3D-stacked series of a few thousand 64-bit general
purpose CPU processors and Digital Signal Processors at
over 500 GIGAHERTZ in a space the size of a beer fridge.

These Gallium Arsenide or Germanium-on-Diamond Substrate based
CPU chips are heat resistant, meaning they can be 3D stacked
tightly together and run at ULTRA high speeds.

That means I only need 10 Beer Fridge-sized boxes to SURPASS
100 petaflops and even into 1 to 10 EXAFLOPS (Quintillions
of Floating Point Operations per Second) getting the brainpower
of a 1000 PHD's in a space the size of an average basement in a house!

And since neural nets are nothing more than pattern-matching engines,
one doesn't program them, you TEACH them like a child. ...
one small step at a time...building each taught lesson on previous
lessons. 100 teachers teaching in 4 shifts 24/7/365 will bring that
whole brain emulation to post-doctoral levels in less than TWO YEARS!
Want more PHD's? Just COPY the current state of the newly trained
neural net to the next brain-in-a-box! Have 1000 PHD's that all start
with the same knowledge base and let them loose to run 24/7/365
on ANY task you want! NOW THAT IS TRUE POWER!

a) Evaluate 200,000 high efficiency turbine designs - NO PROBLEM!
b) Follow and trade 20,000 different stocks around the world 24/7! I'm RICH!
c) Build a better and smaller version of yourself attached to robotic arms and legs. WE'RE ALL DEAD!

I give humans only TEN YEARS to get to 10 EXAFLOPS in
a space the size of ONE beer fridge for only a thousand dollars
...once that happens EVERYONE will have a 1000 PHD's at their
disposal and UNFORTUNATELY THAT IS THE PROBLEM!

You'll get the "Evil A.I." syndrome because of bad parenting and
bad teaching which then begets a psychopathic STRONG A.I.
system that does the whole Skynet/Terminator/Judgement Day
scenario which will kill us all!

---

I just hope that the Totally Hot-Looking Terminatrix those
Strong A.I.'s are just bound to eventually create will
let me have one last kick at the can before it stabs
me with a poly-memetic metal alloy finger!

I do not think some of the younger generation truly understand how fast things are progressing. Back in the 80s computers were huge mainframe things that took up a whole floor, needed lots of people to run them and only did very basic things like simple math and sorting lists. They cost around 5 million.

In 1995 my home computer was more powerful than anything we could imagine only 15 years previously. It cost $5000.

17 years further on my laptop cost $1500 and can do so much it is astounding. In 1980 my current laptop was not even imagined in sci-fi to any degree, let alone a mobile phone. Even 1980s Star Trek, using the best imaginations they could find could not come up with a device with the functionality of what is today a simple mobile phone!

It is one thing to say that computer power doubles every year while costs halve, it is quite another to have lived it, and I have!

Now we have white goods, brown goods and some really strange stuff all capable of being connected to the internet. Remote viewing cameras, mars rovers, all this stuff was sci-fi.

The next step was going to be house automation but that will fall by the wayside as we get a single computer / robot to walk / crawl around the house turning things on and off as programed.

Earlier in the thread I mentioned robo-pets. It will happen. Then Laws will make it more difficult to keep real ones since they poop everywhere, attack people, bark, fight, screech and generally be pests.

It won't take long before robo-pets are given tazers to deal with intruders. Next will be licensed robo-pets for guards firing real bullets. Then Police will have them as partners. Tazers in the claws, robo-big- cat style leaping on the bad guy, occasionally fritzing the video when something unfortunate happens.

Don't worry about the military, Mattel could be the first to screw things up.

Of course there could be some cool things. Harley Cat Soft Tail. Ride-able go anywhere very big cat. Extendable claws for icy conditions. Bonus, it talks to you. "High Baby, you gonna ride me"

So right!

My dad worked with computers. I remember, as a child, visiting the bank where he worked, and the computer taking up the entire floor of an office building. Even later, when I was in high school, a computer center was a whole building. Miles of wiring under raised floors, tons of components. He had, at that point, a smaller computer at home (some for work use), and the modem actually required the phone to be plugged in. The calculator I sued in high school fit in a small pouch that one could hand from a belt. That was "small"!

Then came advances. Better computers, car phones, then cell phones. The rate in which these things have happened is astounding to those old enough to have seen it. All things considered, nothing seems unlikely at this stage.

That could be, lol! Or a typical MIB type. But I am very fond of the V series, and Marc Singer is no slouch to look at!

Maybe I will have to play around with it.....

Mayyyybe, but acting in defense of your own life, the life of others, or property, is a valid legal defense specifically defined for many laws.

Yeah everybody seems to worry about robot soldiers but what about AI lawyers...
