I stand corrected. I was unaware that they came out of the ground in slabs that big. Interesting.

However, the attraction of the rock in the science museum is "paperclips only" whereas a magnet that big usually has a lot more magnetic force.

lets say...that i have a coffin full of monatomic gold

would a magnetite surrounding allow it to levitate

monatomic (white) gold is weightless right?

No clue here. Monatomic gold (as far as I know) is gold in a gaseous form. The white powders I see appear to be some sort of precipitate of gold, and as they all have "shipping weights" listed, I'm pretty sure it's not weightless, though it might weigh as little as flakes of pepper or other dry spices.

Whatever the stuff is (and it probably is a different formula depending on who you get it from), it would only "levitate" if it was magnetic (dipole) and you put it in the "coffin" with the poles lined up just right.

Of course, any thump on the coffin would move the dust or powder from a levitating position to plastered against the wall of the coffin. Again, this is one you can try for yourself with iron powder.
