The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Not really that surprising.
If you go back far enough, almost everyone is related to some extent.
Its simply a matter of those in power have their lines tracked more closely by folks, so they have better records of who their past relatives are.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

Obviously, there is some overlap, but the point is that you are related to everyone pretty fast. This may not render well here because of tabbing issues. It assumes 4 generations a century. You go back to the year 1,000 and you're related to only 4 trillion people. Of course in the year 1,000 there were only a few million people in the world, so you see the issue. Obama is related to Frederich the Great. Romney is related to Frederich the Great. You and I are related to Frederich the Great.

Hey cousin.. what was so great about Frederich the Great? He didn't leave me anything. I bet you didn't get anything either. Our family sucks.

OK, I just looked it up. 10th cousin removed and all. I guess you are right in your sarcasm. Still, it is not the worst first post in the world.

Far from it mate, there are some real doozies that get first post Holy Bucket status.

Personally, I'm amazed at things like this, and really, I don't care if it's 5 times removed from the smell of an oily rag that someones grandfather once used on the wheel of the cart that a horse once owned by the second cousin of the only son of the 9'th wife of someone, once owned.. that they have a link, to me, is something.

over 7 billion people on the planet.. 1 American presidential history. And a lot of bumping cousins..

And look, you don't need haarp or guinness or rainbows to have a decent conspiracy.

Yikes, the inbred freaks..

This is a fun and short video by Vsauce about this very subject:

We Are All Related-- www.youtube.com...

Two facts from the video:
The most recent common ancestor of everyone on earth lived 2- 4,000 years ago.
Every person on earth is at the very least 50th cousins with everyone else.

I have a distant relative that is a recent Mormon convert - the Mormon's are really into genealogy, they believe that you can "save" dead relatives by praying for them - and she's traced our family back to 1500 Germany (or whatever it was called then - Prussia?) on Ancestry.com.

I'm not even faintly related to any of the US presidents.

Ancestry.com is pretty cool, if you're into that sort of thing.

You didn't go back far enough. The video also reveals that there was a person as early as 300 BC who is related to everyone on earth alive today.

Also, from now to the time of the ancient Romans, the world's collective family tree would contain 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 individuals... which is impossible. You can guess what that means.
