White people are less likely to be gay: US African-American highest percentage of 'LGBT' adults

A huge poll of 121,000 people by the respected Gallup polling organization has found that African Americans, Asians and Hispanics are significantly more likely to identify themselves as gay than white people.

A Gallup survey – said to be the largest of its kind ever undertaken in America – estimated that 3.4 per cent of US adults saw themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).

That figure consisted of 4.6 per cent of African-Americans, 4.3 per cent of Asians, 4 per cent of Hispanics – but only 3.2 per cent of whites.

Interestingly, democrats were also over three times as likely to identify themselves as being non heterosexual as a Republicans, while a lower income and a lower level of education were associated with self identifying as being gay, lesbian or otherwise non-heterosexual.

In contrast to earlier, smaller studies, researchers also found that Americans with the lowest levels of education were most likely to say they were gay.

A similar pattern was found in wealth, with more than 5 per cent of those with annual incomes of under £15,000 identified as gay compared with 2.8 per cent earning more than £37,000 a year.

It could be argued that wealthier, better educated people with a higher income are merely less likely to self identify as being gay. On the other hand, it could be argued that this survey tends to contradict the stereotype sometimes presented in the media of gay people being well to do middle class, whites.

In reality, gay people are more likely, taken as a proportion of race, to be African-American, less well educated and having a lower income. Less surprising however is that almost three times as many gay people identify themselves as Democrats rather than Republican.

It should be noted that survey did not account for those not admitting their sexual preference. It is thought that the proportion of people who are gay as a whole is perhaps as low as 2%, however a figure of around 4% is often found in surveys when people are asked.

Think its somewhat incorrect

I know more white gay people as it's somewhat more acceptable in white communities (bare in mind I live in Africa) and less black homosexuals as its not as acceptable.

There are black gay people but it's predominantly a white thing.

Not saying it doesn't exist in other races. I just think they're either hiding it out of fear of being exiled from their community or it's just not something that interests them.

Respected Gallup Organization? Well, Yeah, they USED to be.... With stuff like this, I don't mind saying Gallup is fast LOSING all respect I've had for them.

Really.. Did they just sit back and have a brainstorming session for how they could make the Gay situation even MORE charged and emotional? I couldn't think of many ways myself and surely NO way more certain than to make the Gay issue a racial one too... Good Lord... They have no shame.


No offense to you OP.. You didn't do the study and Gallup is no neighborhood blog to cherry pick an agenda piece from.. It's legit news. It's just news of how far Gallup has FALLEN in my view.

Looks to me like the only thing the poll proves is the percentage of lying (self-preservation type lies) WASP Republicans vs. the "other people" who aren't hiding in the closet-of-denial anymore.

People "admitting" to be being gay and the number of gay people and relative demographic statistics are completely different.

Strict, religious, conservative people are hardly going to be as likely to "come out" as their liberal, tolerant counterparts are they?

If you live in the bible belt or your family is big into church and your brother runs a "gay conversion" camp... it's pretty certain your going to keep it to yourself.

I'm surprised the OP didn't try and bring Muslims into it... I'm sure they will be the end of it, their hatred of said groups is well documented on this website.

I agree it may well just be an issue of rich white males (and females and transsexuals and bisexuals) being less inclined to self report as gay.

However, it is interesting that rather than people self reporting as gay being white and well to do, as stereotypically presented in the media, they are more likely, as a proportion of race, to be African-American, less well educated and less well off.

I'm not sure if I follow you logic.

Are you implying that to associate being gay with being white, better educated and wealthier is acceptable (as the media tends to do), but to report the results of a huge survey of 121,000 people which shows being gay is more associated with being Democrat, black, less well educated and less well off is an attack on "groups and "minorities".

More white people are just from bible belt families who will send them to straight jesus re-education camps so they're afraid to come out.

I find it more likely that these numbers merely represent the number of people in that survey group who are willing to admit it. I understand its probably anonymous, but that doesn't mean some people are not lying to themselves.

As far as the income level, perhaps LGBT are more discriminated upon so they have a harder time finding good work. Or it could be that the higher income people are more likely to refrain from admitting they are LGBT because they don't want to lose there standing. That and Republicans seem to be more wealthy, and I dont really think I need to say why Republicans are much less likely to be LGBT.

Also, where was this study done? All around the world, or just in the USA. There are just too many factors that have to be taken into account to consider these numbers accurate.

I don't think that Gallup asked people their religious beliefs.

Samples are weighted by gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education, region, adults in the household, and phone status (cell phone only/landline only/both, cell phone mostly, and having an unlisted landline number).
