There are already some who are trying to steer this thread towards their own agendas.

Some will imply that this survey "proves" that "non-whites" are "morally inferior" to "whites." Others will claim that it is proof of "WASP hypocrisy." The variations are endless.

Yes, I had noticed that.

I wonder if a survey which had show that most people who self identified as gay were white, well educated and well off would have produced such an aggressive ad hominem attack on the OP?

I think people are upset over your OP actually talking like this poll gave accurate results on which race and monetary status are they gayest. And that your made it seem like race and class had something to do with causing gayness.

Seems i really need to stop trying to be sarcastic, it never ends well.

I remember reading another post from the OP trying to be eleborate on his problem with gays and i thought to myself: "That dude is one homophobic fella"

No offense to you OP..

..is just what i thought.

And you know that most homophobes are actually closet homosexuals, i'm sure there is a poll somewhere.

Hence, this line.

Good to see the Truth is finally coming out.

Keep it up OP, you'll get there.

Careful about admitting you get close enough to gays to hear what they're saying. You know, gayness is highly contagious, it's a disease after all.

I suspect that those same people would have had no objection to a poll that showed that gay people were apparently more likely to be white, well educated and better off.

The media does stereotypically portray gay people in movies and TV shows as white, successful urban professionals.

Down low refers to a black person who is in the closet. This poll was about people that identified as being gay. Nor was it just about "bros", it involved lesbians.

The key word here is that this poll is GALLUP... Which has historically been right leaning, so of course its 'findings' would be skewed as such. If the population sample was say in San Fransisco, I'm sure the results would be the opposite.

Actually you raise an important point.

How common is homosexuality?

While the average American estimates that 21% of men are gay and 22% of women are lesbians, perhaps led by a disproportionately high portrayal of homosexuality in the media, in fact the Family Research Report states that only "around 2-3% of men, and 2% of women, are homosexual or bisexual.", The 2000 U.S. Census Bureau found that homosexual couples constitute less than 1% of American households.

What Percentage of the Population Is Gay?

Homosexuality is much less common than people think.

But then, a Poll in San Fransisco would not be a representative sample of the US population as a whole due to its well know high gay population.

The Gallup survey was of 210,000 people.

So 121,000 people speak for all races? America alone has over 314 million people to think that small survey speaks for everyone and can be taken as fact is just stupid.

If the GALLUP survey consisted of 121,000 people, my question would be this...

Was the survey given to an equal amount of African Americans, Caucasians, Asians, etc... Within this 121,000?

If not, then the survey couldn't possibly be correct. Right?

Actually, as polls go, it is huge.

The 95% confidence interval for the poll is only 1%.

That means that we can be 95% certain that in light of 3.2% of whites polled stating that they are homosexual, the number of whites in the US population as a whole who would also do so is between 3.168% and 3.232%.

The big issue here isn't a lack of confidence or an unbiased sample. It is that people do not always self identify as a homosexual even if they are.

It was sampled in a representative manner.

Survey Methods

Results are based on telephone interviews conducted as part of the Gallup Daily tracking survey June 1-Sept. 30, 2012, with a random sample of 121,290 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, selected using random-digit-dial sampling.

For results based on the total sample of [national adults/registered voters], one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is
