You're out of a job, on welfare? Fine. The Government will put you in a Government-run Apartment.

Hot water is timed. You have 4 members in your family? Press the button to start the shower. It will run for 5 minutes, then go cold.

Reminds me of some time I did once. Pretty harsh.

Someone i knew who was on welfare was proudly saying that he is getting welfare as well as working under the table... he was making more than me...

Does anyone know how much person gets on welfare? i guess it varies by country.

There should restrictions... but what mentioned in OP is a bit extreme.

Well in my state of kentucky.
If you make 1000 a month even with 3 children you only get maybe 50 dollars worth.
But If you make 1k or less and have interracial babies and or not white you get 500 to 600 dollars a month.

How do i know this to be fact.

My sister who has 3 kids and a single mom due to her husband leaving to never return or help had to get on foodtstamps.
Her best friend who is black and has 3 kids works at pizzahut.
Got my sister a job cause she was a manager..MANAGER on salary...
My sister makes 7 dollars a hour 40 hours a week.
And she gets 50 dollars a month foodstamps now...
Her best friend the manager on salary who makes 650 a week base salary gets 574 dollars a month foodstamps still.

That people is where our foodstamp program is broken at.

Do not get me started on illegal migrant worker's who are allowed to draw foodstamps and medical card's while they work in tobacco...they do not pay taxs and never will..so why do we pay for them?

Actually there are two types of EBT cards. EBT food cards (SNAP) and EBT cash cards (TANF). The cash cards (TANF) can be used to purchase anything, including alcohol and cigarettes. They can even get cash out of an ATM.

It's quite comical what our tax dollars are spent on.

Well then why would you describe it in a way which implies it's something you would want.

Can't you detect cynicism, contempt or sarcasm in a piece of writing?

Most can.

Read it again, and imagine it with these qualities.

Yeah well on ATS it's not as easy to tell when someone is joking, there are many people who post things like this and actually believe it. And you should have put this in the joke forum if it's sarcasm.

No kidding lol. I remember reading that.
You know I am all for helping a person get back on their feet. However the system we have in America is failing in more ways than one. It is unsustainable and needs to be overhauled.

Perhaps governments should make employers pay decent wages not £6.08 an hour minimum wage.Try being anything but poor on that.
O.p. you sound like the conservative government poster boy,all stick and no carrot.
Or maybe we should stop giving away money in foreign aid.Seen as you have a problem with people on benefits not working you must have a problem with the foreign aid budget feeding useless breeders(who most likely don't work either)in the third world.

What I have described is no joke.

Sarcasm is used to make bad news taste just that little bit sweeter.

What does an increased minimum wage do if someone does not work? You want to help the people but you don't want to give money to the fraudsters either. It's tough. We had a case in the US where people were buying up bottled water on EBT, pouring the water out, and then taking the bottles back for cashe deposit.

This isn't "all over the world", and most countries just direct deposit a set amount of money, you pay your own bills, food and entertainment, with it and have to budget.

Also, many of the working are under the amount with their children and brought up a couple hundred on assistance.

So you think that a huge portion of society, say 30%, should be treated like this.

I say everyone in the world should be living equal and free without money, banks, and no forced slave labor, but the Venus Project with contributions made from healthy individuals who are not taking time out for children, out of their talents and interests, part time. And that anything else is major slavery and a crime against the universe.

They'd be taken to court, the constitution applies to everyone. And the illegal nazi's fired, hopefully without a pension. You see I want the ones who come up with really evil legislation to actually go to prison.

1984...

Drug use can be chalked up to predictive programing.

Before 'civilization' drug use was primarily reserved for religious purposes. Back then if any number of the population comparatively used any mind altering drug the village/tribe would starve, in the best case scenario.

Modern day life is squishy. Monkey see, monkey do.

Yeah! That'll teach those poor people!

Want to know one of the few problems you would see with this?

If they do that to one group what will stop them from doing it to the next group. Hitting the poor seems like a great way to start, you know, because nobody cares about the poor, they'll pretty much accept it because their government tells them to. But then maybe a few years down the road, maybe a few decades, they will decide that the same thing needs to be done with the "upper level poor," then it'll happen to the next level and so on and so on.
Somethin tells me you aint rich...

Let's not forget that the people you seem to be pointing towards do not represent the "poor" no more than a random obnoxious jerk should represent the "middle class." What of the working poor, who continue to be screwed time and time again but keep going in to the job they hate probably more than you hate yours with no hope of advancement? What about those who do not use drugs or alcohol but have just been dealt a crap hand in life and nobody wants to help them advance because they just so happen to be poor?

Will it be unfair when this does happen and then sometime down the road the people who have the power to make it happen decide it's time that it happens to those falling into the same classification as you as well?

That is exactly what will eventually happen.

We can already see it happening now.

Now, we have Obama Phones. 10 years from now, everybody will be scrambling for the next 'free' item.

They want us in their corner, so that they can trap us.

All in all, they want our children and grand-children, not us. The technological age is upon them, and we will lose many of them to a weakened sense of empathy and compassion.

If we go after the people who receive welfare and food stamps then by all rights we should go after the people who get welfare at the other end of the spectrum. Namely the people who own multi-billion dollar corporations that pay little to no taxes that get subsidies. Why should the tax payers shoulder the burden of giving money to these people just because they don't want to make less profit.

People trade EBT cards for cash/drugs everyday. Banning the purchase of alcohol with EBT cards will do nothing to solve the problem.

I know some people do trade the value of the card for cash ect....
But you can not flat out buy alcohol with food stamps or smokes food and pop is about it lol

So the argument they spend them on alcohol i do not understand cause i have never seen any store where i live at accept ebt foodstamps for alchol the system wont let them it tells the cashier they need cash.

I beg to differ! I have personally witnessed people buying cigarettes and beer with an EBT card on numerous occasions. There is an entire chain of mini-marts in my town that do it, and the stores are foreign owned. The stores have been reported many times over several years, and only once has one of the stores been investigated and temporarily closed. That's one out of about 25 stores.

Edit: And it was rung up as FOOD purchases, not non-food items.

OP has been brainwashed with the classic idea that "many people on welfare use the money to buy drugs".
He is so brainwashed that he would be willing to turn an entire society into an Orwellian state because of his anger/fear about how many people "leech off the government to buy drugs"...

In reality, i can see that only a rather small percentage of people on welfare will spend that money on drugs, there will ALWAYS be druggies in our society or people who misuse the system. Hey, big surprise, get used to it. And by the way, there might also be people OTHER than poor welfare recipients who screw over the system, for example politicians or many rich, corporates etc.

Furthermore i don't have the impression that your idea of "welfare" is actually helping anyone in the slightest, it is actually more like a punishment making poor people's life even worse - the ultimate goal is to support them so they can get back into the work-world (i will NOT deny that some people might simply leech, all right!) - but why so stupid ideas like limiting the light available etc.?

And.."keeping welfare to the esentials"...what else than fricking ESSENTIALS would that welfare money allow? Besides, if they really decide to buy drugs, a big screen TV or whatever from their welfare money, it's their problem.

In Massachusetts, there is a move to limit even where you can use a EBT card. They don't want people to be able to use the in alcohol stores, strip clubs, casinos, gun stores, at lottery commissions, basically anywhere but at a grocery store. They are turning off the option in ATM's to get cash in some of these places, and removing the "cash back" option at the POS.

So yup, think about, EBT cards have been used in strip clubs, gun stores, at the lottery places, tobacco shops, everywhere you wouldn't think some poor person would be spending their small goverment hand out. Regardless of what they did to get it (loss job, disablity) is it not in everyones best interest to limit waste, fraud and abuse?

Its their food stamps let them spend it on what they want.

So these people, who are supposed to be just scrapping by, have enough money on their EBT cards to spend on strippers, guns/ammo, smokes and beer? What exactly do they have money for anyways?? EBT SNAP for food, is that not enough? They need CASH too??

I also don't think EBT SNAP benefits should be spent on junk food
