What the hell is this strange insect I just found? [PICS]

Looks like a baby crab with 1 claw missing to me

Looks like a small mud crawfish with it's head and part of it's body missing. Good for bait, but too small and muddy to eat.

Fukushima related mutant bug?

My best guess anyway.....

Ok here's my 2 cents:

Given the broad location (Northern Tasmania) i'd suggest its a beaten up yabby. For the non-Aussies Yabby (wikipedia)

Pretty much what legs that are intact have the pincers on each legs (or feet), and given the carapieces assumed texture, leg configuration, and the front mounted pincer, it kind of fits (provided you couple in time for decay etc.

I was going to say Crawdaddy/Crayfish, but, it would seem there's another name for them.

I disagree with the crawfish yabby idea. I eat tons of crawfish (crayfisth, same animal). The pictures look nothing like a crawfish or yabby to me. I have seen crawfish in many form of amputation and nothing that resembles those pictures.

We would need to have video of this creature close up and being turned around slowly to get a better idea what it is or isn't.

Reminds me of a somewhat common insect in Brazil. We call it "tesourinha" (in free translation "little scissor"). Scientific name; Doru luteipes.

They usually hide during the day and feed at night (mostly dead organic stuff).

if you rotate the pic 180 degrees you will see some similarities
the other similarity is the second legs with the pincers are the same as yabbies

We have lots of creepy crawlies here in the US.

Here is something we call Child of the Earth, or a Potato Bug.

I don't know where they are found, but it's worth a shot.

It's a half-eaten crayfish some raccoon probably dropped in your yard.
I had one left on my front porch that way.
Only the head and one claw are left.

can i use it as my avitar? Looks like the head of a crawdad. Did you cook it and try it with a little tobasco sauce on it...?

Could be "one of the green ones" from an alien eugenics program come to mate with us.
Their DNA compatibility determination would seem a little unclear on the concept in that case.

Haha no can't say it looks very appetizing. But my dog on the other hand had other plans, but he eats wallaby [snip] for breakfast most days.

I suspect it might be a Parktown prawn.

You get them here in SA, and I think that must be one that swam across the waters.

These Parktown prawns just won't die!!

Looks like some variety of termite, but with the abdomen part missing. (Probably eaten by a rodent or bird.) Closest I thing could find is some species of dampwood termite. However my Google-fu isn't too strong today.
