Is this really a religious thing though? There are parts of North America where the age of consent is 12, which means sex, not just marriage... legal sex.

In the west, no, perverts do not marry young children. They simply use them, abuse them and throw them back on the street.

The US is 16, 17, and 18
But in Connecticut you can be 13 with less then a 3 year difference. For example. 13 your partner can be no older then 15.

And die a horrible death in prison once they get caught...
You seem to have a hard time understanding what is against the law and what some societies allow within their laws.

Apparently, the effective age of consent is actually 18 although it is widely and mistakenly thought to be 12 by some people who are not Mexican.
Which other Western places?

There is also a "close-in-age" exception for 12 and 13 year olds: a 12 or 13 year old can consent to sexual activity with another young person who is less than two years older and with whom there is no relationship of trust, authority or dependency or other exploitation of the young person.

Oh really?
In Mexico, criminal legislation is shared between the federal and state governments. The federal law establishes the age of 12 as the minimum age of consent, while the age at which there are no restrictions for consensual sexual activities is 18 (sex with someone 12-18 is not illegal per se, but can still be open to prosecution under certain circumstances). Local state laws may override the federal law. In practice, the decision as to whether or not to prosecute is left to state authorities regardless of the younger person's age. At state level, the minimum ages of consent vary between 12 (and puberty in a few states) and 15, while the age at which there are no restrictions for consensual sexual activities vary from 16 to 18 (most common 18).
It says here the feds stay out of it unless they are under TWELVE.

BTW your post is wrong too...
Generally speaking, they don't like the age gaps, but it did happen, at times. Here
Prohibited Marriages and Illegitimate Children The minimum age for marriage under Jewish law is 13 for boys, 12 for girls; however, the kiddushin can take place before that, and often did in medieval times. The Talmud recommends that a man marry at age 18, or somewhere between 16 and 24.
