Republican Senate Nominee: Victims Of ‘Legitimate Rape’ Don’t Get Pregnant

Read this from a link off my Twitter feed and it left me speechless.

Rep. Todd Akin, the Republican nominee for Senate in Missouri who is running against Sen. Claire McCaskill, justified his opposition to abortion rights even in case of rape with a claim that victims of “legitimate rape” have unnamed biological defenses that prevent pregnancy.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in an interview posted Sunday. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

It scares me - as an outsider - that someone with this viewpoint could potentially get into the US senate and actually start to look at influencing legislation around this kind of issue.

Are people/politicians in the 'states really so naive to actually believe this? In fact - how on earth did this man get to be a politician in the first place?

Welcome to what it feels like to be an American. I live here, and see extreme evangelical irrationality on just about a daily basis in my real life.

The frightening part is that a couple of decades ago only shady TV preachers would go this far out publicly... Now, with the ultra conservatism sweeping through the country - many people will not only admire this mans message - they will vote for him because of it.

Scary stuff indeed.

If this guy really stated something as stupid as this, then he is officially the BIGGEST idiot I have ever heard of being allowed into a position of authority in the United States!

Maybe we should start making people take an I.Q. test before running for public office.

OMGosh this is atrocious! Really!? Is that why there are children that are a product of rape?

Unfortunately, being highly intelligent is not a requirement for the job.

Couldn't help but wonder, though, where he got this information. I'm pretty sure this didn't come from any scientific studies. Could he be speaking from first hand observations?

Yes, Right wing America, this is YOUR party's candidate for Senate of the United States of America, where only 100 human beings out of a nation of some 310 million hold a seat. This body, the once esteemed tiny group was designed and intended by the Founders to be where the rational, thoughtful statesmen would sit, to balance the raucous House of Representatives, to do the serious work of the nation. This is THE choice of Republicans to represent the Great State of Missouri.

Yeah, you people keep trying to convince us that YOUR side makes ANY sense, much less HAS any sense. You keep trying to toss out the laughingly ridiculous arguments of equivalency.

But then again, any group whose members would put this COMPLETE and utter idiot as their candidate is likely not able to construct a coherent phrase, much less truly understand any sentence containing words with more than two syllables.

I can't wait to read the posts of ATS Right wingers quoting learned scholars of exalted institutions of higher knowledge, like Liberty University (coughing, choking on sarcasm), putting forth Creationist "science" "facts" supporting the "only women legitimately raped can get pregnant" theory.

Just another example to the rest of the world how DEEPLY UNHINGED is one of this country's 2 ruling parties. It is HIGH time, since our 4th estate and the ignorant electorate is unwilling, for the rest of the world to isolate us and designate us a terrorist nation over run by religious insanity.

Indeed, this is the new American "normal." Just imagine, seriously, what people like this must think qualifies for "extreme"? I mean seriously, modern Christianity is a dangerous curse on the nation. The zealots will call me a Christian hater, but I've nothing but love for your average Christian of 3 decades ago. This group is some twisted, mutant viral strain whose members literally get more ignorant with each decade. What you see today with the Westboro Baptist Church will none too soon become dogma for Christians at large at this pace.

I tell you, and no one can convince me otherwise, these are the EXACT same type of people who were there rooting Hitler's rise. Wave a flag and cross at them and they'll believe anything, follow anyone, at any cost to the country they claim to love.

And a note for all you "normal" Christians. At this point, you are the same as the alleged "good cops." You know, the ones who know who the bad apples are, but are either too afraid to denounce them or silently agree with them and cover for them, excuse them away as just an occasional bad actor.

I honestly think I just had a Lewis Black moment. I read something so stupid that in 24 hours it will cause a vessel in my head to rupture. Either that or I'll bang my head against the desk until I forget what I just read. Both will likely have the same outcome.

Hearing this, sadly, doesn't surprise me in the least. Some of these people make Sarah Palin look respectable and intelligent.

Its not really a party politics thing... when it boils down to it the question is how can someone who comes out with something so crassly stupid actually be in a position where they can run for senate - and who the hell would vote for them?
