'End of capitalism': Bolivia to expel Coca-Cola in wake of 2012 Mayan 'apocalypse'

Well if anyone believes that expelling Coca Cola will end capitalism they must be idiots. Capitalism has proven to be even more resilient than marx and mao predicted. It does however mean that it has chronic failings!

Since the Bolivians took to the streets to take back their water supply after it was given to Bechtel by the World Bank, are you really surprised they now want to throw out a company that is polluting it?

As for Coke being an American company,

Waving the stars and bars under your nose every now and again to get you to buy more coke does not make them patriots, just salesman.

They are a worldwide Corporation, America is just one market of many to them.

If Bolivia throws them out, good for them.

P.S. Didn't Coke invent Fanta during WWII so they could keep selling to the Germans?

Its all BS. How many local companies are trying to penetrate the market and/or increase their market presence? Do you know of any local beverage companies in Bolivia? This is nothing new as in many countries, they do not generally encourage FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) into retail industry. Coca-cola has been kicked out of many countries in the past due to the above reasons. Generally the big giants like Coca-cola ensures to grease the political hands for a long time to penetrate a major market. Would love to see what transpires in Bolivia

Maybe its different in Bolivia, but in the U.S., sprite is made with corn syrup...Sierra Mist on the other hand, is made with cane sugar. I mean, they all suck, but at least that's not as horrible for you.

there has been a correction added in the article from the huffington post. The quotes have been taken out of context unfortunatly, and there is no chance of Coca Cola being removed from Bolivia. Shame, but there it is.

Not sure about that. It depends the area of the country. Last time I was in Bolivia, restaurants were full and lots of night life going on. Maybe people there doesn't declare all they got.

Sprite is a Coca-Cola product goofball.

Well, Bolivia is part of the ancient Mayan homelands. They want to kick out Coca Cola. It would take several months advanced notice/ planning. December 21, 2012, happens to be around the time when it would be feasible to give Coca Cola the boot. December 21, 2012 also happens to be a date that people find important and is often associated with change.

So to me it makes sense that they would announce that they are kicking out Coca Cola on the date of 12/21/12 for the reasons above.

Regardless, does it kind of unsettle anyone else that 12/21/12 has now been used as a part of foreign policy?

If i lived in a country where a public figure like a politician publically says "in 2012 all planets line up"...i would RUNNNN, RUNNNN. It's a different story whether some nut case on a forum makes some silly, entirely wrong statement, or a member of a government. And, even worse, makes a political decision based on this nonsense.

Also..aside that this statement already seems to be debunked...i'd personally know what the alternative to the bad "capitalism" is supposed to be which Coca Cola seems to stand for. So..let's assume they want to "get rid of capitalism"...and then re-introduce Communism because it's better? Or what?

I dont think it is ending capitalism there as much as they are ushering in the new era of energy drinks.

Bolivia is a very primitive country, is the government removing Coca-Cola or are the people demanding Coca-Cola to leave? Bolivia is basically folowing Chavez and this country is non-player in the world community. If the people want to become the future North Korea, just continue to living in the dark.
