After delays, massive US bunker-buster available

www.jpost.com

Facing possible intervention in Syria, Iran strike, 30,000-pound bomb capable of penetrating underground facilities is ready.

In face of possible military intervention in Syria and a strike against Iran, the United States has announced that its largest bunker-buster missile capable of penetrating underground facilities is operational and ready for use if needed.

Called the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP), the 30,000-pound bomb which contains over 5,000 pounds of explosives was originalI

I find the timing of this announcement to be slightly convenient especially if you are to consider the context of the article. The article is an obvious propaganda piece from an Israeli outlet aimed to influence public opinion to agree with intervention in Syria and Iran.

These bombs sound pretty destructive but I wonder whether or not they can perform what they are claimed to do which is penetrate certain underground facilities. If these claims are true it allows the United States to seriously cripple Iran's nuclear and defense capabilities without even having to use nuclear weapons.

Here is an old news clip on this bomb:

Is this weapon the MOAB, FOAB, or maybe GOAB?

All I can say I hope I never have to deal with the possibility of any of those ever getting dropped anywhere near me! Those things are said to cause a lot of damage, but is this just saber rattling?

I think this is the real deal

Many innocents will die due to bombs like these.

Ha!

As if all the other weaponry they had wasn't enough, now they need a new weapon to justify striking Iran!

These people are too predictable...

AND THAT'S A FACT.

Lol, yea. I just had to say it.
Anyway, in strength, this bomb is a quiet a bit weaker than the MOAB, but its not designed to burrow into the earth before exploding like the MOP is.
I remember seeing the MOAB test explosion on YT, it even appeared to form a small mushroom.

Explanation: S&F!

Now they have something that MAY do the job ... what miltary assets can carry and deploy such extremely heavy ordinance?

Personal Disclosure: No point having such things if they can't deploy it in a war theater of operations!

Explanation: Uhmmm?

I couldn't find the ballistic missle you mentioned.

The closest I could find was this ... and they are no longer in existence!

Martin Marietta M14/MGM-31 Pershing [designation-systems.net]

The MGM-31 Pershing was the first and only solid-fueled MRBM (Medium Range Ballistic Missile) deployed by the U.S. Army. It has been in service for almost 30 years until all nuclear MRBMs were phased out and destroyed according to arms reduction treaties.

And I dont believe it would work becuase it wouldn't be able to carry the full 30,000lb payload.

And just replacing the nuke warhead with 5000lbs of HEX isn't going to do the job required.

Personal Disclosure: If I have misconstrued the information as supplied ... then please link me to a credible webpage/website that details the 'persian110' missles specificationa and capabilities.

Bombs away.

Both the B-2 and B-1 have the bomb bay configuration and gross weight capability as well.

There isn't a ICBM in the U.S. or Russian inventories that has a 30,000 lb throwweight.

The MGM-31 Pershing was withdrawn from service under the START treaties in the late 1980's and only had range of about 1000 miles with a single warhead that weighed less than a 1/4 ton.

What made the Pershing a game-changer and freaked the Soviets out was its terminal guidance which gave it the tremendous accuracy and with it the capability to reliably target command and control with a small tactical warhead.
