Just when you thought the security for the Olympics couldn't get any worse, the UK Border Agency and Home Office workers are going to strike the day before the Olympics start....

Airport immigration staff have decided to stage a 24-hour strike the day before the opening of the Olympic Games.

UK Border Agency workers are among thousands of Home Office employees who will walk out on July 26 in a row over jobs, pay and privatisation.

The Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) is also warning that its members will take other forms of industrial action, such as a ban on overtime, from July 27 to August 20.

This time frame covers the entire Olympic period and means crucial border controls at ports and airports will be hit, threatening disruption for people travelling to the Games.

The move is a further blow to the Government as it works to make sure that the Olympics run smoothly.

This will be yet another embarrassment for the government, the Olympics and Great Britain. What are they going to do...call in more soldiers? They can't really call in more G4S as we know they aren't in the good books.

I'm not sure how much the airports and passengers themselves will be affected, these may be office workers rather than the people on the shop floor. We'll have to wait and see.

No man it's all good, we got the TSA coming to save us! Lock up your daughters and sons for that matter, don't think they care much which one they feel up!

There was an article saying that train drivers are considering striking during the Olympics too!

Personally I couldn't give a damn about the event! Just glad I pay no tax, or should I say refuse to be stolen from!

What makes me laugh is they steal money from workers to pay for the event, then charge the same worker an entrance fee! HA HA HA... What an awesome scam they got going!

WOW, that is some extremely powerful striking. If these Olympics are anything less than a total disaster it will be a miracle.

Pretty sad reflection on Chinese Socialism vs. Western Democracy. The Chinese Olympics went off flawlessly, they even fixed the weather! The London Olympics look to be falling apart from every angle.

This makes no sense to me. I understand how workers in the UK might be irate over pay, benefits or conditions. Maybe all 3. However, this is the Olympics. The entire world is looking toward London for a very short time. Most nations take this opportunity to put on a show and give an impression the world will be impressed by. China scored an A+ on their efforts and Australia did a fine job as well.

Why are the British, in multiple sectors, choosing this moment in time to make their country look it's worst on the world stage with strikes? I get the leverage it gives for negotiation, but is it really all about winning at absolutely any cost? Even national image for such a brief and important period?

It appears the Government and Olympic Authority over there did wonders for making this all a mess before it's begun. Adding to it? Really?

Hosting the Olympics is already an embarrassment.

You get nothing out of it but expense and debt.

Hosting the Olympics is like paying for sex. Quick jollies followed by a lifetime of herpes.

Sad but true. There is really no good incentive to volunteer for this ginormous headache and wasted real estate. I am really starting to wonder how much longer the Olympics will even go on. Does anyone watch it?

Add to that they've got Morris Dancers for the opening ceremony!

I give up.

Good job the soldiers haven't decided to hold their march on the same day....that would be a wake up call for the government.

It's like the Elite Brits aren't creative enough to come up with a way to botch the security on purpose so they just do what they always do and be Arrogant about it and just act like nobody will notice.

Once again...the elites....not the common British citizen.....who I actually respect.

Not a good time for airport immigration workers to strike, considering what a target the Olympics is for terrorists...

But then, I guess that was the point. Strike at the worst possible time.

I'll be so glad when the Games are over, I'm sick of it already.

I heard on the way into work this morning that advertisers and TV folk anticipate this to be the most watched Olympics in history.

Personally, I dont know a soul, acquaintance family or friend, who has ever watched the Olympics.

I feel bad for the Athletes. They have sacrificed their lives for this event, and because of greed and ignorance of a few, their hopes and dreams may be tainted.

Forever.

Me neither. I mean, I've seen it on a few times in sports bars, and I've flipped channels and paused on it for a few minutes here and there, but I've never heard a single soul saying they were going somewhere to watch the Olympics, or staying home to watch it. I think in the US, if we watch it, its like soccer, we just see it by accident in the Mexican restaurants.

The British aren't. However a bunch of rich fascist dinosaurs who want to run the country (aka unionistas or in polite society 'scumbag trade union leaders') see the Olympics as a means of causing lots of trouble. Because it's fin and gets them publicity (normally we donlt hear much about festering sewer rats in the news). They care nothing for Britain, nothing for their union members, nothing for anyone but themselves and their champagne drinking comrades.

Maggie Thatcher's worst mistake was to not cull these evil bacteria once and for all.

But, we're British. So we'll have a cup of tea and carry on regardless. Don't listen to the rhetoric. Their puerile playground actions will have no effect except lead to new legislation to stop punitive strikes being called without a majority of the union members supporting it. Or, if I ever got to power, a nice trip to the vat of boiling oil.

so far....

G4S ahem, we all know about that fiasco and those already 'employed' still awaiting emails about how / when to commence their posts, now global front page news
www.ft.com...

Home Office staff striking during the entire Olympics, who is going to cover border control at airports and ports?

The Olympics has so far been mostly a very costly embarassment to the UK and has negatively affected the tourism industry for the duration of the Olympics.

How this globally recognised embarassment will affect UK credibility in general, future tourism and business investments remains to be seen.

How this has affected the current UK population, is being seen right here right now, with strikes and opposition to how this event is unfolding, shows the low morale and resentment of a nation that has been systematically abused by successive governments.

Those working and not, facing financial uncertainty while the infrastructure of practically every essential institution stretched to breaking, due to oversaturation of resources from unprecedented and unsustainable levels of immigration, mismanagement and corporate greed.

The UK population is paying the price and isn't happy. Prior NIMBY complacency has come around and thoroughly bitten the population.

If there is a solution then it should be sought and implemented immediately.

If there is a Lord (a real one as opposed to a pretender) then Lord help us!

The olympic village is almost an ideal model for a corporatocracy. You can only eat McDonalds food, drink Coca Cola use Visa cards, wear certain branded clothing and hold only positive thoughts for the games and the sponsors.

This would be how the whole world should be to these brands.
