It is an scene of almost apocalyptic proportions

www.dailymail.co.uk... More pictures on link

Bystanders are dwarfed as they stand watching a tremendous rush of water gushing through gaps in a dam in China, part of a carefully-choreographed operation to remove silt from the Yellow River in Luoyang, in the Henan province.

The operation sends more than 30 million tonnes of silt downstream a year with more than 390 million tonnes shifted in the last 13 years

The Yellow River authority says such operations lowers the river bed in the lower reach of the river by an average of 2.03 meters each year.

Would you really want to stand this close

Now this is where you can say .... DAMN!!!

Somehow reminds me of the scene from the movie 2012 ... When the Ships came out after all the carnage!

Maybe only my imagination but I see faces of...running animals?

In the falls.

Anyone else?

Peace

I see it too. Like a stampede almost. They look almost live wolves! Nice catch.

To OP... No. I would not stand that close. Nor would I want to live anywhere in the general area of this dam. We have a small one here that we all but sit on top of to fish sometimes, and it wrecks my nerves the whole time.
It is silly, I know.

These photos are amazing. It's like the water has a personality.

With it being made-in-China, NO WAY!!!

Wouldn't want to stand so close, noooooo! I am really unnerved by large bodies of still or running water. Worst nightmare for me...

....buuuuttt..... its a necessary process to rid the water of pollution (I think its called siltation but not entirely sure). Can tell you something though. I wouldn't just want an umbrella as protection.

All newer dams do that every year thats why they open from the bottom to get the silt out. Dam aint no damn good if it's only holding back dirt!! Ausable river dams have been mostly converted th this kind of outlet. Normally they run over the top of a certain area but when they get silted up they open the bottom of the dam proper

Whew!

Glad it wasn't only me then....

i would not just trust that area they are standing on. that's a HUGE amount of weight transfer and violent action coming from that water.

i wouldn't do it.

this certainly doesn't sound like a run-0ff. and generally dams get worse the longer they are allowed to blow free like this. wondering who's down stream from this?

What is with China and damns? I read a thread here on ATS about 3 Gorges damn. I'll have to see if I can go back and find it. It was about the movement of such a large amount of water I believe.

They also displaced numerous communities and destroyed many varied ecosystems to build that dam.

I see the animal faces, but the one that gets me is on the left, middle of the pic.
Looks demonic.

So now China has two dams to deal with. I think they have issues with the power of water.

yup. a lot of countries have dams and yes they are built to move/hold a large body of water.
