If the former, couldn't care less, do what they want. If the latter, I bloody well hope we get that referendum as that is a massive transfer of Sovereignty

Hi, according to Newsnight last night it is currently the Eurozone countries only. There was a debate on whether there would/should be a referendum.

The proposed greater fiscal and political union will initially just apply to the Eurozone. But it will be argued that we will be left at a disadvantage, on the outside edge looking in (such opinions are already being voiced). And it will be argued that not being involved (ie not having a say in decisions) will harm British interests (also being voiced now). That's when we will be suckered in.
And that's when the whole propaganda machine will start rolling. At that point the state of our country may well be a whole lot worse than it is now. So don't underestimate the fear factor.
Sadly I think the majority of Brits will have neither the understanding nor the backbone to say 'no'.
Nick Clegg is already calling Eurosceptics traitors. As they say in the States, go figure.

The conspiracy theorist in me would say the populace of Britain has been conditioned for a yes vote over the last 15/20 years. As you say, people will not have the understanding or backbone for a no vote when things get tough.

It makes you wonder when we have had the consistent dumbing down of the education system over the years to the point where some kids are leaving school without the ability to properly read and write. Even the kids leaving with good grades have been sold out due to exams being easy as pie so to speak.

Then you have the massive underclass of families who have been living off the state on benefits for GENERATIONS now. They won't give a hoot what happens as long as their Giro keeps coming through the letter box.

A cynic would say a bit of social engineering has been going on. The wheels have been set in motion for the nation sleepwalking into full European integration.

I hope it doesn't come to that.

Germany's credit rating was cut from A+ to AA- does that change the outlook of the EU and the World?

Economic union would create a "United States of Europe" - why would this be any worse than the United States of America??

Others have pointed out that you simply cannot have a monetary union where every state gets to decide its own monetary policy - so the choice is quite clear - eitehr give up enough national sovereignty to stay in monetary union, or get out of it.
