Yep, apparently any gun is now considered a 'Weapon of Mass Destruction" in North Carolina, at least.

Police charged an Asheville man with possession of a weapon of mass destruction. Winston Alden Gunnels, 31, of Lakewood Drive, was caught with a rifle equipped with a silencer, according to a warrant served Friday

Wiki's definition of 'wmd's' :

A weapon of mass destruction (WMD) is a weapon that can kill and bring significant harm to a large number of humans (and other life forms) and/or cause great damage to man-made structures (e.g. buildings), natural structures (e.g. mountains), or the biosphere in general.

No. This is groundbreaking. Guns are now 'wmd's' which really opens up a whole new can of worms in terms of what countries we can invade.

It was not the gun that was deemed a WMD - it was the silencer attatched to it.

While I personally do not consider this a type of WMD, others might - as there is really only one reason to want a silencer on your weapon.

However, in this state it is illegal to own a silencer.

Not owning a weapon.

Lieutenant Wallace Welch of the Asheville Police Department said that 18-year old Tommy Lee Harrison Jr., of Asheville, was charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, possession of a controlled substance within 300 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of pyrotechnics, resist delay and obstruct and possession with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute schedule IV substances.

He had a lot going against him, wonder if they are going to make a big deal out of this cause the Tommy is black?

But it wasn't so much he had these things, it was just way to close to a school, Could have happened to anybody

how does a silencer make a gun capable of 'mass destruction'?

Stan ? Hey hello Stan ? My god man do you understand this mans weapon had a

SILENCER

on it ?

See Stan good assassins don't get caught with their silencer deployed home boy.

Doesn't even matter this guy is going away for very long time. The cops could have very well just tossed that charge in on top of the other major high power felonies that come with having a silencer on a weapon.

No this guy is friggen done .

not. sure. if. sarcasm.

Again, a silencer does not make a gun capable of 'mass destruction'.

Okay, I guess what confuses me about this ( And please correct me if I am wrong, because I know very little about guns) is that I thought silencers were legal...Maybe you have to have some special license in order to own one, I don't know...But that would still be legal. Maybe he had one illegally...But still...That does not equal WMD.

Calling a rifle with a silencer, a WMD....That is a scary stretch being made...

Aren't WMD's supposed to be...Nuclear weapons, biological weapons etc?

A rifle with a silencer... How utterly insane.

That sounds like something a hunter would use, so as not to scare off other animals when shooting....

I don't know what else to say, other than, to me, calling a rifle with a silencer, a WMD, makes no sense....

I guess, this guy had other charges against him and it seems they were looking to throw the book at him...Looks like he got hit square in the face with said book.

Alright lets look at it from the point of view you have rendered.

We now have two highly incompetent police officers. And that's it. Does that make sense ?

I haven't check the gun laws either . This is all off the top of me head.

Mass Destruction as I understand it is a device that shoots a single shot to kill a massive amount of people.

WMDs according to fbi

In July 2006, the FBI created the Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate, or WMDD, to build a cohesive and coordinated approach to incidents involving nuclear, radiological, biological, or chemical weapons—with an overriding focus on prevention.

I get it, one guy getting whacked means a whole branch of descendants will never exist.

UMM, Yea that is Bull#~!

It is NOT illegal to own a suppressor (it is NOT a silencer) You must FIRST (like in ALL states) get a BATF tax stamp and approved by you local Sheriff (which is the Buncombe county and one crooked ass Sheriff Department) Once that is done you can have own shoot with and enjoy the SUPPRESSED sounds of hunting and target practice!

Kinda wish people used that space between their ears to search before looking stupid!

It's more than just two incompetent cops if such a charge has been allowed to stick...I think so anyway.

Let's hope the Justice system comes through in the end and this guy gets a fair trial...

You could kill more people from a church tower with a rifle with a silencer on before they found you, so yes it would cause mass destruction to the victims family's etc.

You could throw bricks off of a church tower, hitting people or even killing them with it.... Should bricks be WMD's as well?

What about....bowling balls? Or glass? I could scatter glass on the street, some one could run over it their car, causing a wreck and killing people....

Should glass be a WMD?

I hear banana peels are slippery. What if I threw one on the ground, some one slipped on it, fell and died.....Should we classify bananas as WMD's?

Hmm

I'm all for that as you might suspect but GAWD this guy is stupid. You just don't do certain things like run around town with a silencer on your rifle unless this was the beginning of something horrible that was about to jump off.
Cops may have had a tip and reasons for the atrocious charge.

Don't forget, there is always a watch commander agreeing to, or recommending the charges.

I do agree...It is stupid... What the guy did was beyond stupid.

So is the charge of possession of a WMD.

And yeah, maybe he was about to go on some shooting spree or something. But thinking about doing it, and doing it are two different things.....The day we start charging people for crimes they MIGHT commit, is the day we have entered into the book, 1984.

And, besides if that were the case, would he not be getting charged with...something more like...Attempted terrorism or something? But then again...I forget that we are living in a society with a rather corrupt justice system...So who knows.
