When it comes to being friends with a gay person 40% of Americans say they don’t have any gay friends, even if they support same-sex marriage.

In a new CNN/ORC International survey the number of American’s who say they have a close friend or family member who is gay jumped from 49% in 2010 to 60% today. The new polling number is significantly hire than a similar poll in the 1990s in which most Americans said they did not know any gay people who were close to them.

CNN Polling Director Keating Holland reveals:
“Attitudes toward sexual orientation have also changed over that same time period. In 1998, a majority believed that someone who is gay or lesbian could change their sexual orientation if they choose to do so. Today, only a third feel that way, and the number who say that gays and lesbians cannot change their orientation is almost six in ten. Those shifts probably explain the growing acceptance of same-sex marriage.”

While 60% of respondents now acknowledge knowing a gay person only 54% believe gay and lesbian couples should be allowed to legally wed, while 42% oppose legalized marriage within the LGBT community.

As expected Democrats stood more firmly beside gay couples in the poll. Seven in ten Democrats and six in ten independent voters support same-sex marriages and believe they should be recognized as valid law, while 72% or Republicans oppose gay marriage.

The study also found that nearly 66% of the under 50 crowd supports gay marriage while 55% of those over 50 are opposed to same-sex marriage.

The poll included 1.009 adults who were questioned during a nationwide telephone survey. The study is believed to have a plus or minus sampling error of three percentage points.

Does anyone give a [SNIP] if people have gay friends? How would you even know? Do gay people wear a sticker on their forehead now? CNN is being offensive if you want to get all liberal about it. Hypocrite state media [SNIP]s

when the gays weren't around the christians who are also insane conservatives constantly spewed anty gay rhetoric...when the gays were around they were all "like" friendly...

it kinda made me throw up in my mouth a little...
so now I hit em with stuff like this at every opportunity just to watch them hypocrits wilt

considering people like this christian conservative dildoebirger:

EDMONTON — There were cheers at Edmonton's Gay Pride festival as Alison Redford became the first Alberta premier to participate in the annual event....

...Redford's Progressive Conservative government announced this week that the province would resume paying for sex change operations. The province had stopped paying for such surgery three years ago as a cost-saving measure.

I suspect that the correct interpretation is that 40% of Americans do not yet know that at least one of their friends is gay.

What a STUPID poll! CNN did it?
Considering how STUPID it is, I'd have thought it would have been MSNBC. :shk:

Are we all supposed to go run out and make buddies with a gay person now? Start collecting them like some people collect stamps or bottle caps? Jeeeeze. Aren't we all supposed to NOT CARE what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own bedrooms? Am i supposed to go around and interview people on what they do in their bedrooms so I can go claim a gay person as a friend? Considering that only 1-2% of the population is gay, that would be me sticking my nose into the private business of a whole lot of people before I found a gay person that I had anything in common with and could be buddies with!

REALLY REALLY STUPID POLL!

I think it is like Shoonra said
there are a lot of gay people out here who profess anti gay rhetoric to hide thier own sexual proclivities,

Ted Haggard had lots of friends who didn't know the head of the largest coalition of evangelical christians in the US was also gay...till he was defrocked.....
Christian Obama belongs to the oldest gay bath house in Chicago...
GWBush had gay military "escorts" from the press gallery running around the whitehouse at all hours and for days at a time, according to the Secret Service logs....

people have a lot more gay friends then they think

Hahahahaha I have at least 15 little pink tinkerbell fairy boys in my entourage. gay people know how to party and they are very generous and hygienic.

And they always know sexy woman and they bring them to the pattys. And then the sexy women they bring notice how non homophobic you are when you have your gay buddy sitting in your lap singing Whitney Houston and with any luck they end up on your lap later.

Handy little buggers. Oh and if you don't feel like going to a mall you can ask them to grab some stuff for you and they are more than happy to do it. It might be a little tight and a bright color but hey.

Gay people are dope.

There is no link to your story... But I did find the CNN poll. CNN Poll

The question:

Do you happen to have a family member or close friend who is gay or lesbian?

Family member or CLOSE friend narrows down the number somewhat. It isn't "Do you KNOW someone who is gay"? If that were the question, I would expect a higher number right now. Almost everyone KNOWS someone who is gay, even if they don't know they're gay, Know what I mean? The 7-11 clerk, the guy at Burger King, the lady who works in the bike shop.... Gay people are everywhere. Not all of them wear a banner proclaiming their sexuality.

Maybe 40% don't have a gay friend that they know of... Not all gay people are "out" even to their friends, for fear of rejection. So, as more and more people face their fears and come out, I suspect the number will continue to increase.

I don't see anything wrong with this poll. This is a legitimate social issue and civil rights concern. I think we have to talk about it, just like racism. I hope this trend continues.

Sheesh, you're like a guilty white person who showers "black people" with praise from the heavens to prove how not racist they are. Tell me, is it ok to generalize whole groups of people as long as it's positive spin?

How is this even relevant to anyone? Does it bother CNN or the pollsters or the politicians that we associate freely? That your choices for friendship might not include a Jew, a Muslim, a gay man, a gay woman, a Christian, or any other flavor of the month group that the media and government is pushing.

The notion also in the title is the use of the word "still" -- which was interjected as I see from the link, by you OP -- as if it is some social taboo NOT to have a gay friend. That we need to start shunning those who don't conform and go out today and get themselves a gay friend.

So my guess is you have a problem freely associating with others and that because they don't freely associate with gay people, there must be something wrong -- because they STILL don't have one....

I can say that I have friends that are jewish, muslim (mostly at work), christian, gay and lesbian. A conservative or three as well.

Just the trick is to forget about politics, forget about CNN polls and most of all, forget about personal biases and just interact as friends.

I know many people who are gay but I wouldn't call them my "friends". I don't dislike them but really we have nothing in common.

Just ignore them.

This is a discussion board. The whole point is NOT to ignore things.

It's NO ONES BUSINESS what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedroom.
People can't tell by just looking at someone or even talking to them if that person is gay.
Well ... unless that person is flaming or something.
It's like what Danbones said. I stand by what I said - the poll is silly.

Here is how indicative the poll is and how we should take it with a grain of salt -- it should be said of all polls of course to look into the methodology and cross-section they sought.

**NOTE PDF LINK**
CNN Poll

I enjoy looking deeper into polls because we see how someone spins the information they gather and make projections upon the readers; because what average reader goes to the source and examines the data?

I enjoyed the OP's linked commentary on the CNN piece because they used words like "As usual" when referring to Democrats and their stance on issue regarding the gay community. But the poll doesn't mention how they determined if a respondent was "Democrat", "Republican" or any other political group.

This leads me to believe that their source information comes from "registered" voters and are correlating their registered political party with their stance on gay issues. This would be like asking me these questions and then saying "See! Even libertarians don't have any gay friends!" While I am a registered libertarian in the State of Nevada, it holds nothing to my views on social issues.

This is just another example of how the "news" attempts to shape social commentary and social views by making large projections using 1009 phone respondents to label all of the United States.
