and moms, retired people, wives for a second (might find one day only) family income, and I don't believe that you ain't gonna find some people working them that reallly need a better paycheck but just can't find a job that will hire them for more. the job market is kind of tough...

Markets should be the force setting wages, not government.

Minimum wage earners are in fact low to no skill people who lack the skills to demand a higher wage in a competitive market. The absurdity of a burger flipper or drive through worker making $10 an hour simply because of politicians pandering to the low income earners in order to garner their vote is laughable

We the people have the right to vote for politicians that would make such laws. We the people can elect politicians that would rewrite or add to the constitution. The constitution IS allowed to be changed by those the people elect to run the government.

Looking at wages in other countries is informative and adds perspective to the discussion. Seems most countries do have a minimum wage, of sorts, in one form or another. It's interesting to see, and compare, the various differences in minimum wage policy as it relates to the standard of living throughout the world. Of particular interest to me were the policies in Norway, Finland, Germany and Sweden. Take a look at this list of minimum wages throughout the world.

really, I think by now they've stripped all the excess baggage that they have, as far as employees go, they can cut only so many, I mean, any business needs a certain number or workers there to operate, and the way our economy has gone lately it wouldn't surprise me if they can't cut any more. so, I think it's more of a matter of if they want to survive, they are gonna have to find a way?? and well, their competitors and other businesses in the area are gonna be forced to pay their employees more also, thus giving them more money to blow, they may find their business is needing more workers if some the those employees decide to spend that money in their place??

I mean come on, the big wigs at the big corps get huge raises just about every year, inflation should have gone through the roof by now if increasing pay causes the product to increase. and those big wigs are more apt to put their money to work making more money than to go out and spend it all... at least when you are talking about the low wage earners, you can be pretty sure that the money is just gonna be spent and put back into the economy!

As said before, ya..the price of goods go up.

I sort of like it though as its a nice round number. work 40 hours at minimum wage, its 400 bucks..no need for a calculator (also will be able to easily see how much is being taken out in taxes).

So ya...up it..not that it will improve anyones life mind you...but it will make things simple.

I would also be in favor of reducing it to 1 dollar an hour and have things deflate to that price (a big mac costing 10 cents, etc).

Why would it effect unemployment? Everything just gets readjusted when they do this. Its ineffectual. the value of a dollar will go down, goods cost will go up, and voila...

I think it makes sense simply from an accounting standpoint...you worked 2k hours last year, how much did you make at minimum wage? easy...20k..no need for a calculator. I think it makes things really handy actually.

I think it would be a great idea to get the government out of price fixing our wages. Then the free market can determine your wage. Cant afford a loaf of bread because you don't make enough money? Find an employer that is willing to pay you more. Cant find people to run your small business for dirt cheap because they don't want to work for meager pay? Pay them more money and create a quality product.

Of course, if the value of the dollar was worth what it was in 1913, where roughly two cents back then was worth what one dollar is today, before we weaned ourselves off of gold and silver as the backer of our currency, then we would be far from this mess.

But as long as the federal reserve exists, and as long as they continue to bail out the big money makers and print more money into circulation to offset the debt, then the value of our dollar will continue to decrease. The only reason now why our country isn't completely bankrupt is based on faith in our dollar from other countries like China that buy our debt from us, because right now, the american dollar is worth no more than the paper it was printed on.

It is 8 dollars now for a meal at a fast food restaurant. Remember when a mcdonalds big mac meal was 2.99? Remember when gas was 89 cents a gallon? Me too! Understand in a nutshell how the monetary system is run? Too bad, you should have voted for Ron Paul.

By others, you realize it would have been foreign automobiles that would take the place...
there is no garage car manufacturing...GM is one of the very few manufacturing automobile industries left in the US.

Sounds like the only ones that would cheer about the US automotive industry to fail are people desiring to see the end of the american economy and a full dependance on foreign markets.

This is a serious question and not meant to belittle any small business owner that employs workers. I seriously want your views.

How do you feel paying your employees a wage that they are unable to support themselves on?

It doesnt matter anyway....I actually make very good money..but every time I get a raise or cost of living allowance my property taxes go up, gas prices go up, my health insurance cost goes up, or something else goes up....I make about $1000 more ever year I work but am still only to save about the same amount each year...

Prices have gone up, but it hasn't been because of that. Prices go up regardless.

$10.25/hr is NOTHING. If you want to live here, this "minimum wage" equals to about $1200.00/mnth take-home. (after tax)

And that's based on an 8hr work day 5 days a week, which many in that income group do not receive.

It's a slave wage.

You'd think since all the # we buy now comes from China the cost of living wouldn't be so ridiculous...

At first you go oh $10.00 an hour sounds good. But afterwards if you're a thinker you realize what they're doing.

On purpose these people are deliberately trying to kill what's left of the economy (I'm not a big thinker,not really, common sense is what its called)

You see if you make employers pay employees $10.00 an hour, no matter what the monetary gain the company, (although it won't hurt say Microsoft, Apple, or Google yada,yada, hope you catch my drift.) But if your a small company, combine $10.00 with say whatever "regulations" these companies are going to have to do to keep with one government just one (who know whatelse) entity say EPA. . . .and not enough consumers because they raised their prices on goods too high, will mean lay offs, depending on the size, situation . . . . it could be permanent or temporary.

Therefore, not a good idea.

There goes the economy even further down the tubes. Just my thoughts. No real economist here.

So what? The economy is going to crash anyway from trickle up greed, so maybe the government is doing us a favor crashing a bit sooner. Then we can move to socialism and those that cannot cope with the change might need to readjust their attitude at the fema rehabilitation center.

I am pretty sure it is not evil in any way and has swimming pools, tennis center, and ah......gasp..... maybe an oven or two.

Not exactly because the employer is paying half of that social security and a person pays the other half and what a person collects is far more than they ever pay in to it.

You pay 6% and that's it and people get far more out of it than they ever paid in, and they are already paying for unemployment benefits as well.

What the hell does the rest of that have to do with the topic?

Although I agree with you, this is coming from someone who lives in a province with a ZERO % provincial sales tax, and only a 7% goods and services tax.

Your taxes are literally HALF what most other provinces in Canada pay.

Hell, you can still buy a 6pack of beer in Alberta for $6.00 !

Minimum wage in Alberta is $9.40/hr. That's a hell of a lot more than $10.25 in BC, that's another sad fact.
