Interesting. I just checked the site I always go to for EQ info

World Earthquakes

And notice "Iran" had a 5.1 or 5.2 within the last hour. Wonder if that was a real quake or a test? I don't follow their seismic activity over there but thought it was interesting

The OP was quite justified in posting this event.
Located right under Long Island volcano, a quake of that size under ANY volcano is reason for concern
Moderate explosive eruptions have occurred during the 20th century from vents at and near Motmot Island in the south-central part of Lake Wisdom (the caldera)
300 years ago one of the largest historical eruptions in Papua New Guinea deposited andesitic tephra across the New Guinea highlands, prompting legends of a "Time of Darkness"

Normal? 1 of 9 quakes above 6 in 47 years within 54km of Long Island, and 1 of 26 in 47 years within 100km (onto the main island of New Guinea now)
Well yeah sort of normal if you look at PNG as a whole, normal within 100km of a PNG volcano? yeah sort of, if you consider about every 2 years there is a Mag 6 there.
Depends how old you are and your concept of time.

OP worth posting it? , absolutely!
But without any background research or particular details of interest it would have been easier to post it on Quake Watch 2012 along with all the other 6's and avoid all the nasty childish comments.

Downgraded to 6.8Mw and 6.5mb BTW

I'm just waiting for the "8.5 California" thread. Lol. It's gonna happen... eventually.

You will be a long time waiting then. It is unlikely ever to happen, except possibly in the furthest North of the State on the border with Oregon. Other than that 7.9 to 8 is the tops.
