Unfortunately, I doubt the ivory will leave China.

Billionaires with new money will splurge on trivial items to flash their excess.

Environmental concerns are for the lower life forms......Not the Asian elite.

Trade sanctions on contraband such as ivory are useless if there is a market for it. Most wealthy westerners are well aware of the ivory trade and refuse to buy it. In a country like China, there is a growing group of billionaires who either don't know about the actions of the poachers or don't care.

Either way the effect is the same.

The price of ivory goes up, and subsequently, elephants become their #1 target. Ensuring their demise if nothing is done.

Well obviously, I know nothing about the buying and selling of Ivory.

Just in general terms: If the price goes up, and if it is only a small group of people buying it, and only in 1 area, then wouldn't that mean they will run out of customers?

I don't know. Maybe I'm thinking about it backwards.

I think you would find that we will run out of elephants before the wealthy Chinese run out of trinkets to buy.

That is why there is a worldwide trade ban on trading ivory.

It appears the numbers are rising. I did a thread not too long ago that stated 50 elephants a month were getting killed, so that number has gone up.

Killing an animal to create bobbles and other items out of its horns is a favorite of the rich. They're the only ones who can afford to buy a piano with keys made of ivory, so this is something that I don't see going away until the last wild elephant is dead or placed in a zoo.


On the other hand, rhinos are also being killed in great numbers for their tusks. While elephant tusks are used for scultures and the such, it is believed that rhino horns have healing properties and can aid one in the areas of love and sex. It is very expensive to purchase a potion made with rhino horn, so, again, this is a problem that the greedy, rich are creating and probably won't stop until the last wild rhino is dead or placed into a zoo.
