Thanks to Ken Lewenza, the President of the Canadian Auto-Workers, over 460 families are thrown out onto the scrapheap.

His trade union's obstinacy has forced Caterpiller to shut down a manufacturing plant in Canada, throwing 460 workers out onto the street without a job.

Why is it the unions fault and not the corporation?

Links?

Of course it's the union's fault. Caterpiller offered them all a job, but the union bums were just too lazy to take them. What a bunch of primadonnas.

Sounds like the Qantas dispute.

Why blame the workers? Maybe they should outsource the Board of Directors at Caterpiller. That would help the profit margins more than exploiting its workers.

Nothing's being outsourced. Production from the closed plant is being sent to INDIANA, USA...NOT INDIA.

It's a little more complicated than your opening post suggests. Caterpillar was asking it's workers to take a 50% cut in pay, which would be a hard pill for anyone to swallow. When the workers disagreed to that, (although they did offer to take cuts to vacation time), Caterpillar locked them out.

There is another piece, too, but I'm having a hard time tracking it down. Caterpillar did take some money from the Canadian government recently and, of course, the assumption that money was given on was that Caterpillar would continue to do business in Canada. I'll post that as soon as I can find it, but it does appear that Caterpillar's intent all along was to shut that plant and move that part of their business to the U.S. where labour is cheaper. Offering a 50% wage cut was perhaps just a mechanism to force a strike, and then a lockout, so that they could claim an hostile work force as a reason to shut the plant. Shifty, in my books.

The Union was FIGHTING on behalf of the workers who would have had their pay [color=gold]CUT IN HALF by those SCUMBAG CORPORATE THIEVES who never can get enough of the BONUSES and PAY INCREASES for themselves as usual.

Blame the scumbag corrupt, greedy Corporation. They were probably hoping for this to happen anyways.

Unions represent the PEOPLE, corporations represent [color=gold]GREEDY CORRUPT SNAKES who would pay people a buck a week and make you work 20 hours a DAY if they could get away with it. SOMEONE has to fight these BASTARDS on behalf of the WORKERS!!!!!

The Union may have lost THIS one, but have WON in many other situations in the past on behalf of the WORKER whom [color=gold]corporations SPIT on and SCREW over every chance they get!!!

Here's some of the info about the money Caterpillar took from the Canadian feds:

"A hugely profitable company, Caterpillar benefited from millions of dollars in Harper government tax giveaways. But instead of investing in its Canadian operations, Caterpillar chose to provoke a conflict with its Canadian workforce demanding outrageous salary cuts that it knew would be rejected. In the end, Caterpillar took the tax breaks and then shipped out the jobs, all with the able assistance of the Harper Tories. "

If you are getting paid TWICE as much as you are worth, and are offered a 50 Percent pay cut.

TAKE IT.

Well, of course this is utter bunk. THe union leaders just a bunch of layabouts, their heads filled with socialist claptrap seeking to represent the union leaders.

These poor people have lost their jobs JUST BECAUSE OF THEIR IGNORANCE AND OBSTINACY.

The only people stealing are Ken Lewenza and his union bums who have taken wads of dough off the workers in order to lose them their jobs. Paying the union has means paynig to lose your job. These union bums are absolute scam artists.

Why blame Caterpiller when they were OFFERING GOOD PAID JOBS that the lazy union bums turned their noses up at? In the midst of recession, this company was actually offering to HIRE.

This is of course, deranged bunk from someone whose mind is filled with socialist claptrap. You strike me as one of those corrupt scum who actually still supports a minimum wage, the job-killing evil that has left millions on the scrapheap of life.

...And just how much did YOU pay to auto-workers this week? Did you give even a single dollar to a single worker? I suspect no, so why why expect caterpiller to hand out money-for-nothing?

Well, Ken Lewenza did and now 406 families will suffer for his wickedness, whilst he walks away with a nice secure job as Union President, scamming millions of workers out of their hard earned pay.

I don't think it's accurate to blame it all on Lewenza. Before a union strikes, a strike vote is put to it's members. A definite majority has to be obtained, it's not like Lewenza himself can call a strike. The workers did it, and, in my opinion (don't cyber yell at me now), they should have.

You've mentioned now a couple of times that Caterpillar was going to hire. Were they? Do you have a link? From what I know, they simply offered a pay cut to existing employees. Of course now it looks like they will be hiring once they move to the States, but I'm not so sure they were in a hiring position in Canada.

I think we should take every penny of anyone making over a million a year...because no one is worth a million dollars...not a single person on this earth is worth that much money.

Don't bash the unions, without them we would be screwed.
Personally, in my job, our agreement is up. Been offered a 2% raise, but there was a clause in the last agreement that if no agreement, we get 2.75%. So better for us not to agree.
Inflation is higher than that, so we still go backwards.

The flag pole at a school near where I grew up, suddenly failed. Due to wet rot that the school had negligently left unrepaired, it severed at ankle-length and plunged down smashing the skull of a kid who happened to be standing where the top would have hit the ground.

Whilst doctors managed to save his life, some 90% of his brain was reduced to pulp - The smartest kid in school, destined to go to the top universities in the land, survived but as a cabbage, paralysed in a wheelchair, unable to tell whether it is day or night. He has to be attended to by a nurse 24/7.

The courts awarded him $1,000,000 in compensation against the scholl who admitted gross negligence.

According to you, this kid should be stripped of the funds that sit in investment trusts to pay for his care and he should be left on the street to die. What an outrageously vicious view.

He said a $1,000,000 a Year
Not a one time payment
If it was me i would make the school pay a 1,000,000 every year

Unions.....wonder if they're becoming scarce?

My Hubby is a Union member for carpenters, the Main guy from the union sent a letter out a couple years ago telling all the members to look for another career , that the building industry was going to be in bad shape for quite a while.

Now that's a main business.
Lemme tell you how things are now...NO insurance , less than half pay....still have to pay those dues though! So we lose MORE than half pay and have to also pay cash for Dr and dentist visits , Gyno, pediatrician, vision,ER too AND I wanted another child but can't because of this awful mess.

Now take that situation and times it by all the other carpenters and then how many other trades with unions in the same type and you have a whole lot of people whose quality of life has gone way down and stability is gone , that feeling of security.....dipping into your 401k/annuity because you need to pay your rent or had a medical emergency....then there's all the other scenarios played out since this mess began....it's awful and I see no end in sight...and it seems like "they" don't give a flying fig either.
Just my story....hope it changes for all of us.
