The store in the Chatham neighborhood on the city's South Side was long-delayed by a political fight that pitted the world's largest retailer against labor unions demanding Wal-Mart pay a livable wage.

I was rolling over laughing...

This was like reading over a story with two people you detest in a fight....


This will not hurt walmart too much...

This has hurt the unions by draining funds out of there coffers...


I see this a laughable and not an accomplishment... but maybe a sign.... with a union backed POTUS...

both sides spent tons of money and all the got was 8.25 per hour and no union in the store...

what missing from this piece....

How did the union fight off Walmart...now that is a much more interesting piece

Approval of the Wal-Mart came after labor unions and the retailer reached a deal that calls for the retailer to pay Chicago employees at least $8.75 an hour, which is 50 cents above Illinois' minimum wage.

my guess is that no construction would take place... with the local governments support of course... which includes permits ect.... no union you cant build here sorry...

So, you support Wal-Mart's homogenization of this country?

I don't know about you but I side with the unions because Wal-Mart treats their workers like crap. They promise low prices and once their stores open, they fill up with some of the strangest, stupidest people I've ever seen in my life.

this is an important issue because this is about delivering votes and favors....

Government has a monopoly on violence.
They have the troops(cops); they have the guns; they have the apparatus( courts); they have the Jails...They have the means to turn it it on and off( permits; licenses and fees);
No wonder the Unions use them... legalized "knee capping". The Mafia should have it so good...

Every Walmart gets stolen from...this one won't be any different.

It's Chicago, where dead people vote dozens of times, and where Obama did his "community organizing" and where Rambo now rules the city. Nothing there is unexpected.

Isn't this actually a win for the labor unions and the workers?

Sure, they cannot force WalMart to unionize, but they still negotiated a higher wage than WalMart would have paid in the first place.

That's the way I read this story.

I tend to side with walmart over labor unions, I can walk into a walmart and get a job. It is not that easy to get a labor union job.

I side with neither... please re-read the OP I posted...

to give a better point... two sets of people, neither of who are good company, went at it... (for sports fans its like watching two teams you hate or dislike play against each other....)

and the union seems to have won.... overall points wise...

How did the union 'fight ' walmart for eightish years.... it appears with corruption...

Walmart was just greedy enough to want the money so they only folded on wages... you do know as soon as they are finished building they can fire the employees and restaff... no contract as such can forcibly be upheld...it is an agreement with the union for wages not for employees... none who are unionised...

the only thing keeping them in line is that the crooked union would stop other endeavors...

So we learn here crime and corruption do pay... the Alderman's tax returns would be nice to read....

I will not side with the union over this because they abandoned the other walmart employees...what about them...

He, I believe, is laying a claim that this one will experience more young socialist spreading the wealth.... Id partially disagree with most of it except to say it will be a more diverse shopping crowd experience

I also wonder if walmart paid off the locals as well....

It is what I saw in this... A strong political apparatus in place delivering goods and services to their backers....

you see the other side here of the left out story...

how did they force walmart to play ball... this is not a win for the labor unions.... they should their hands and may of cost themselves more in the long run then they realized...

They exposed their lines to power and of power...
