I'm going to assume the Iranian people are sick and tired of being bullied by the west and Israel.

I would think they'd be sick and tired of being bullied (and killed, and beaten) by their own government.

Amnesty International on Tuesday condemned the executions in Iran of four Kurdish political activists and another Iranian man, all convicted of "moharebeh" (enmity against God).

The four Kurds – Farzad Kamangar, Ali Heydarian, Farhad Vakili, Shirin Alam-Holi - along with Mehdi Eslamian, were hanged on Sunday, 9 May at Evin prison in Tehran. The five were accused of "enmity against God" for carrying out "terrorist acts" and convicted of this vaguely worded charge which can carry the death penalty and is usually applied to those who take up arms against the state.

"We condemn these executions which were carried out without any prior warning. Despite the serious accusations against them, the five were denied fair trials. Three of the defendants were tortured and two forced to 'confess' under duress," said Malcolm Smart, Amnesty International's Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

"They were then executed in violation of Iranian law, which requires the authorities to notify prisoners' lawyers.in advance before carrying out executions."

Speech, Press, and Assembly: Free speech, as such, does not exist in Iran. Human rights activists and other perceived agitators are sometimes subject to beatings, arrests, torture, and disappearance.

Religious Expression: The Islamic Republic of Iran is a religious institution with no secular concept of law. Those who convert from Islam to another faith may face execution for apostasy. Religious minorities are routinely subject to widespread persecution.

Women's Rights: In Iran, women can vote and run for Parliament and are not prohibited from traveling freely, but they are also subject to police beatings and torture for violating perceived social norms, are not protected from domestic violence, and are discriminated against in other subtle ways (such as inheritance law

Philosopher is Enemy of the State in Iran

Abdolkarim Soroush is on of Iran's best-known intellectuals - and he is also considered an enemy of the state in Iran because of his ideas regarding the relationship between religion, government, and science. According to Soroush, science cannot progress very well or very far under totalitarian regimes - more interestingly, perhaps, is the his addition that this is an Islamic, not a Western, perspective.

A very definite possibility is that most of those Iranian students who suddenly opted for nuclear engineering (or something closely related) as a major have very different plans. They assume that nuclear development is a topic near and dear to the Iranian leadership and, therefore, someone who appears to be training for it would get lots of help from the Iranian govt -- maybe the best accommodations, a scholarship, ... and maybe even permission to study abroad such as one of the great scientific schools in Europe and the US. In other words, these students are going through the motions in hopes of getting a chance to escape from Iran.

This is called blowback. Instead of Iran being threatened by terrorism, their education has now increased; I bet the Israelis are now wondering if they should have committed the blatant terrorist act of killing a scientist.

PS: Remember in Goldeneye for N64 you lost the game when you killed a scientist.

Iran: Over 1000 students apply to change major to nuclear physics, engineering

I've heard of suicide by cop...but suicide by occupational choice; that's a new one.

Given the dangers of being a nuclear scientist in Iran, this speaks more about how bad the conditions in Iran currently are....so bad that over 1000 students have a death wish.

Death wish? Escape from Iran? Wow. It couldn't just be that they are protesting one of their own getting assassinated by choosing a similar career could it? Kill 1 and 1000 fill his shoes. Although I don't agree 100% with Iran, you have to admit, that is epic.

They should make nuclear physics and nuclear engineering the only majors where you get education for free, that way come in more applicants.

Right.

Remember, these are students. Nothing guarenteeing they'll complete their course of study. They might find out it's hard and go back to underwater basket weaving or something.

Well duh. Any people with any spine will do this.

Just like any war.... every time the occupation force kills someone/kidnaps someone, 100 more join the fight.

Humans don't like to be bullied. When they are, they fight back.

Every time the government steals more liberties, the more people wake up. Etc... it's just human nature.

Apparently the warmongers in Israel and the US don't understand that... or they do and that's the plan.
