Yeah, saw that.

I'm in Tennessee so that one is too close for comfort.

No sense in waking up the New Madird like that.

Yeah, I know you are!

I didn't feel a thing though, and wouldn't expect to with such a mag.

It would probably have to be at least a five or six??? What do you think?

No, too far away to feel anything. If that would have been closer and bigger in magnitude, maybe.

New Madrid needs to stay quiet though, hopefully nothing to that one. A burp maybe. Lol

Just wondering because of the way we felt that one in DC in the spring here in upstate NY.....I think sometimes it depends on depth and other factors?

That was my first earthquake, and I do not want to feel that again!

Not even for sure we would feel a five, maybe a six? I have no idea. Why do I feel like quakes in OK are man made? Does this spread to NM?

You and I think alike Mama, we know it is all connected.

309 hour El Salvador.Costa Rica Update
thats 12 days, 21 hours, 52 minutes, 36 seconds

I would have let this one die off by now usually, but the northern aftershocks are still going on, 173 from the El Salv 6.8mb and 22 from the Costa Rica 7.7mb, according to INETER=Instituto Nicaraguense de Estudios Territoriales

I'll do a page for Costa Rica by itself, but while I was doing the maps I stitched them together, I think they are related.
The question is "which volcano on the mainland is going to erupt first?"
L.Managua had a swarm of 1s,2sand 3s during the period and L. Nicaragua did as well, but not as many.
maybe thoseare background volcanic activity, I haven't followed INETER for a couple of years now.

Can't figure why the larger quake had less after shocks, unless the 6.8 was a fore shock.

Central America Aug/Sept Series interactive map

you can click the Costa Rica series on and off, but not the El Salvador series, must be a quirk of Google Maps, it worked in Google Earth OK, something to do with KML.

Vladimir Putin took part in the APEC business summit plenary session

The President addressed the APEC business summit plenary session September 7, 2012 Vladivostok

The APEC business summit, attended by APEC economies’ leaders and more than 700 business community leaders from throughout the Asia-Pacific region, is taking place in Vladivostok.

PRESIDENT OF RUSSIA VLADIMIR PUTIN: Colleagues,

(...)

Аccess to sufficient, affordable and safe energy resources is a fundamental condition for ensuring stable growth in the Asia-Pacific region and throughout the world.

Strengthening international cooperation in peaceful nuclear energy is another issue. We all know about the Fukushima tragedy, which has been a big lesson for us all. We will continue to meet the highest safety demands in building and operating nuclear power plants. We are currently carrying out a number of projects in this sector in Asia, including building a nuclear power station in China. I was very pleased to hear that our Chinese friends and partners are satisfied with the quality that we offer. I also note the strong international dimension of these nuclear energy sector projects.

We are not chasing big profits and any extra money we can get, but are building relations with global technology leaders, so as to have leaders in their sectors handle each component of these big international projects. These are costly projects, running into the billions – from $2-3 billion to $8-10 billion. In each case, contracts worth around 25-30 percent of the project’s total cost go to subcontractors in the partner country, where the facilities are being built. This is the approach laid out in the bilateral agreements we sign with our traditional partners, and the safety issue is of course the top priority. This is something we discuss, coordinate and agree on with our friends in Japan, the United States, Australia, and other countries too. We will continue to follow these principles.

Putin: Asia-Pacific region needs a disaster monitoring system
September 7, 2012
Interfax

rbth.ru/articles/2012/09/07/putin_asia-pacific_region_needs_a_disaster_monitoring_system_18034.html

Moscow is proposing the idea of launching a system of monitoring natural and man-made disasters in the Asia-Pacific region, said President Vladimir Putin.

"Russia wants a regional system of monitoring natural and man-made disasters to be formed. We are prepared to cooperate intensively with our partners in the Asia and Pacific region in this project," Putin told the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum's business summit on Friday.

"The Fukushima nuclear power plant disasters was a serious lessons for all," he said.

"High safety standards of nuclear power plant construction and operation is the demand that cannot be ignored," Putin said.

"This particular approach lies at the base of the bilateral agreements which Russia recently signed with Japan, the United States, Australia and other countries," he said.

"We will adhere to it in the future," Putin said.

Hello People,

I rarely post just normally lurk and soak up the info, so please go easy with me. I have previously asked about very shallow quakes, and although I don't post about all of them, I was hoping someone could help me out with this one :
3.9 40km NE of Winnemucca, Nevada 2012-09-11 05:55:16 41.265°N 117.453°W 0.0 [depth] USGS

earthquake.usgs.gov...

This is what the USGS says now, although it happened many hours ago. Then I found a newspaper article ( I know, I know, unreliable)

latimesblogs.latimes.com...

which states that the info they got from USGS was the depth was 2.5 miles.

I've looked at it on google earth and it appears to be in a small desert/mountainous region (I'm rubbish with google earth/maps I am trying to learn).

So my questions are: which are the most accurate sites to use for cross referencing quakes, both for depth and size?
Second one is not earthquake related, but you guys are more experienced than me at google earth
- what are the round green things near the quake? If you zoom out there are quite a few of them. I have been told that these are crop fields for precision agriculture, but I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance
