Text as the closest thing to an anarchist state in the world right now - Somalia - is so f**ked up that it couldn't ever be considered a positive endorsement of the theory.

As far as Somalia goes dont you think Imperialism is to blame?

Whether representation of value comes in the form of the goods/services or in the form of printed certificates, there's still an economy and a capitalist system. McDonalds and Coca-Cola could operate in a world without money, but the financial and logistical processes would be radically different.

In my opinion, people would often pay in accepted commodities such as silver or gold, and employees would be paid the same and/or provided food or housing by the employer (depending on the agreement they come to). Speculation of the value of commodities would be an industry itself.

Absolutely - its just a shame when a legitimate and interesting opinion or viewpoint is diluted by ambiguous, unsubstantiated dross (thats not back at you, btw).

Although i'm staunchly anti-anarchy, that doesn't mean i'm staunchly pro-police state! A state with a lot more laws would be no more enticing an option than a state with a select few, or none.

Regarding the OP, I think the factor driving this isnt so much anarchy itself, (and we will take anarchy to mean non-violent, in line with what I see is fairly common consensus here) - rather, what anarchy represents - a more individualised, humanist approach. Compassion, equality, fairness, happiness, simplicity - all of which are admirable traits in a society. I think, however, that even in an instance where anarchy introduced these qualities (or improved them from what they are now) it would also bring uncertainty, isolation, anxiety and fear. If thats a best-case scenario - then the likely outcome would be far inferior - and in my eyes, unviable.

What?

Embrace anarchy?

I mean just look at all the attributes that organized BigGov has brought us...Taxes and more taxes, dishonest "civil servants", snail mail, thug cops, the TSA, Homlend Security, CIA, FBI, IRS, and don't forget all the fun of endless wars...

Everybody grab your flag and wave it!!!

Only as far as any country can blame any previous, occupying force - and that would be the case for most countries in the world. I'm sure the Native Americans weren't too happy when the Brits and French rocked up - nor my ancestors when the Romans decided they fancied a bash at Britain!

It creates perfect conditions for jerks to breed. If jerks knew that they could get slapped with a duelling glove at any time there would be alot less jerks.

Yeah wouldn´t it be cool to be raped and murdered by the next best sociopathic maniac only because he´s the strongest fish in the local pond? Sure anarchy sound like a lot of fun as long you are the dominant guy in town. But most people are not.

Well what if we unite against the imperialists because I think we can blame everything on imperialism. I think imperialism is our greatest threat. Global imperialism will consume us all.

I can relate to Chuck Palahniuks 'Fight Club'. It says alot about how the modern world makes us impotent. Makes us feel imasculated. The modern world makes us paralysed. The themes seem to blame consumerism materialism and commercialism. It is saying that by placing such importance on material gain we are missing out on things that are real. We are missing what is good. It is saying that societies values are all out of whack and it is difficult for those that are aware.

I agree with all that. But I think the book is wrong by suggesting that we need to compromise. Why cant we all be Tyler Durden? I like that Durden does not care what comes after the rebellion. He does not fear it. He does not even plan for it. All he cares about is burning it to the ground. Smashing it up.I think there is something awesome about that. Why should we be scared? Why should we pull back?. When do we break the cocoon?.

The most common defense of capitalism is that nothing else works. Well guess what? Capitalism isnt working. Upward mobility was a scam and all the major players are basically bankrupt. Its time to roll the dice. The world is broken. Its not worth fixing the way it is. We must burn it down so that we can rise from the ashes like the pheonix.

We used to be hunters. We are missing something. Anarchy would give it back. We dont know pain. We are non participants, non combatants. We get a DNP.. We are not in the game. I would welcome anarchy and something real. Cavemen had something that we are missing if you ask me.

Anarchy could be good.

And it would be good if we were all like Tyler Durden. (not that we should join Project Mayhem, but we should all embrace our inner ubermensch )

I'm not so sure anarchy is the answer. Chaos would make things worse, not better. It would free the abusers to abuse. Not good.

Having said that, I do agree that our world has lost the concept of consequences. If there was a real consequence to bad behaviour, bad behaviour would be a lot less prevelent. What we need is the ability to deliver consequences to those who commit wrongs without having to fear being subjected to the same, or worse, consequences ourselves.

Who do you class as Imperialists? The Western countries have / are all complicit - as are others including China, Persia, hell even Mongolia if you go back far enough? Who is actually left, to unite with?

Moreover, could many of the same accusations not be levelled against major world religions - they too have created and perpetuated an unequal economic, cultural, and territorial relationship?!!

I doubt it would be so easy. Who guarantees that you´ll be the stronger force every time? Realistically it should be as probable that the guy shoots you. If you fend him off the next one comes tomorrow. And who says that he comes alone? What if a group of thugs decides that they can have a lot of fun terrorizing the people around them.(this tendency is quite visible in several third-world countries with deFacto non existant government, think of the various warlords and "rebels" in some african countries). Can you defeat them all by yourself? Probably not. Of course there would be a solution: Teaming up with other similar minded guys, maybe some form of milizia. But this kind of organization in principle is nothing else than what governments/police do today (or should be supposed to do) on a smaller scale.

They want anarchy. I do not. I want a orderly society where i can prosper as i always have. I want government in place to pave my streets, create utilities like fresh running water and sewage. Cities would fall into chaos under anarchy. So yes, i will fight anyone wanting anarchy tooth and nail.

Oh course it isnt.

If you were a Somali and blamed imperialism, would you become a pirate or try and do something about it and make your life better in a constructive, good for society and yourself kind of way?

Blame who you want, when all is said and done, everyone is responsible for their own happiness in this life. You can whine and complain and point the fingers at others for causing your problems, or you can do something about it. I prefer to be in the latter group.

I think I am at the far end of the scale. I see socialism as something that would bring us together. And I think we should be minimalists and live simple lives. I think 'profit' is evil. It just creates envy and expoitation. I think ending capitalism would be like ending greed. I think it would bring people together. I think there would be less anxiety, less mental illness. Why is mental illness so high with us babies in the west? I think it is capitalism and greed and envy. And I think it is guilt and dispair.

I always am disgusted by people that think I am some purity crusader because I am envious or I have nothing to lose. I feel guilt and dispair. I find the world psychotic. I feel guilt that I have so much and am so fortunate. They next thing jerks say is "well give away your stuff and move to Africa to help the poor" Thats just stupid. It needs to burn. We need to smash it up.

Predictable. I was just writing about this.

What makes you think I have problems. What makes you think I dont have a much more awesome life than you?

I bet I do actually.
