I want to spruce up my avatar but haven't a clue how (outside of paint). Is there any free programs that can help?

Gimp is a great program for all platforms.

If you are running windows it might be worth taking a look at Paint.NET if you happen to dislike Gimp's interface. www.getpaint.net...
