A good start would be to finding out how to receive weather satellite signals and then how to decode them with your PC.

Software....decoding

Failing that, get into HAM radio......You'll find most die-hard HAM enthusiasts are right into sat tracking and HAM forums can be a plethora of info on getting started in the world of satellite reception.

Either Information Systems or Electronics (Communications).

The diagram is called a black-box diagram that shows an approximation of the information flow inside a communications satellite.

Each box is a rough representation of a single monolithic function. Each of these black boxes could also be broken down into further black boxes, all the way down to component/logical level.

In modern electronics, most integrated circuits are too complex to bother breaking down to component level each time they are diagrammed. So instead of pages and pages of diagrams, they are shown simply as a black box with a single known (but usually complex) function.

it'sthe communication section probably a simple satelite tv transponder satelite "x-band" and "ka-band" are two different frequency bands in the ghz range.
"LNA"''s are (low noise (input) amplifiers)
XIF and KaIF are x-band and ka- band (IF)"intermediate frequency" "heterodyne mixers" upconverting or down converting rf frequencies.to an "IF" frequency for processing.
the"8-beam phased arrays" are antenna arrays.

What's to know? you hit it with an x-band or ka- band signal it rebroadcasts them with more power( the little trangle or arrow shapes near the output antennas usually represent an amplifier or buffer.

This is just a basic overview block diagram; of the major sections the actual schematic would be many many pages long.
Generally:Always start at the top left. Industrial equipment electrical enclosures are always drawn and wired so incoming power comes into the panel disconnect in the top left of the drawing (and panel) and flows left to right; top to bottom.i.e. The tops of fuse blocks are hot with facility power when the disconnect is "on".
