Ok the BBC article mentions that experts have already said it will be used to track rioters and criminals, and that innocent folk shouldn't worry because their images will be deleted - but I think this is complete bull.

www.bbc.co.uk...

Researchers at Kingston University have created a system that uses artificial intelligence to recognise specific types of behaviour, such as someone holding a gun.

The technology is capable of following a person across multiple cameras

This is how it would work.

When an event is triggered, the software collates video footage from before and after the incident to record a full history of the suspect's movements.

"If a window was smashed and shop looted in a town centre street, the technology would trace back to see who smashed the window and then retrace his steps to see when and where he entered the town centre.

"The technology would also trace where the man had gone after leaving the scene," said Dr Orwell.

Does anybody else find it funny that the developer's surname is Orwell too??

For those blaming Europe for Britains problems.

This is your own government doing this.

The most tyrannical government Europe.

allthough i AM fascinated in the development of such technology this is taking it a step to far.

sort of a 'pre-emptive war' on crime.

and we all know how those wars usually turn out

Britain has been a police state for decades, they use ANR on cameras to look up car plates all the time, they know all the movements of cars in and out of the entire UK.

They monitored all calls to and from Northern Ireland the past few decades.

They stopped and searched members of the public without reason for decades, notably in Northern Ireland (by the Army).

Britain PREEMPTIVELY arrest protesters before they can protest (even in wheelchairs) at events.

Europe isn't the problem here, BRITAIN is.

The riots were staged to bring about this sort of thing...

The media give it the big'un about how all these new measures will protect the 'innocent' people. Shame these innocent people are mugs and believe that it is all for the greater good.

Game over, It all goes downhill from here....

You appear at times mirror those you hate and in not very good ways either... all Brits indeed.. every Brit on ATS blames everything going on in Britain on Europe.. come on? you really believe that or what? I know the ATS saying seems to run along the lines of haters have to hate.. but I never quite believed was true until now.

I have worked all across Europe implementing EU directives in many countries from the North to the South and I have never come across so much hatred rolled up in one person..

This will be my one and only response to you, but honestly you'll end up getting ulcers at the rate you are going.. while I guess this post will be deleted for being off topic, in the meanwhile please, take care of yourself and your blood pressure.

Don't be absurd. None of what you mention is anything like a ''police state''.

Citing examples of more draconian measures in Northern Ireland is dishonest, because we know the troubles they had there - not to mention that your examples are in the past tense, so I'm assuming that you are saying that they're not still ongoing there.

It's also a bit rich claiming that Britain is more ''Orwellian'' than the rest of Europe, considering that you are in Germany, where you can be imprisoned for the ''thought crime'' of denying the holocaust.

Just about every country in Europe ( including Britain ) has ''hate speech'' legislation and makes it a criminal offence to view child pornography. More measures which some could argue are ''thought crimes'' and restrictive governmental measures which curtail freedom of speech and freedom of expression.

Or are ''thought crimes'' only ''Orwellian'' when they are not supported by general consensus ?

I actualy dont mind the cameras. Their mostly in city centre's and if there are people causing trouble its usually quickly spotted and the police arrive promptly to sort it out. Just saying

So, answer me this... All those cameras around the UK, how come they cannot identify the rioters?

hmm?

Britian has the highest crime in Europe, how come the Camera's don't lower it?

Nordic countries have some of the lowest crimes, and also don't have as many cameras as the UK.

Why is that?

The SOLUTION to crime is not a TECHNOLOGY one, it is a SOCIAL one.

In my opinion they are a good invention. They catch idiots who are driving round our country without one or more of the following: insurance; a driving license; road tax. I'm sure it can also detect if cars have been used by people who have engaged in recent criminal activity

Please remind me what the downside to that is again? I'm sure that pretty much everyone who has had the misfortune to have been hit by an uninsured driver or a driver without a license will understand the benefit to the police using ANPR cameras.

I know for a fact that the fewer people on the road without insurance, a license and/or road tax, the better

Because an actual crime has to be committed first. You can't just arrest someone because they were ''hanging around with a bunch of people who were committing crimes''.

CCTV alone will not secure a conviction, but can be used - in conjunction with other, more refutable evidence - as compelling support for a successful conviction.

LOL !

No Britain doesn't. Have you got a source for your bizarre claim ? I'll answer that: No, you haven't, because you've just made it up.

If public spaces has cctv surveillance everywhere it does not constitute a police state. Everyone has the right to film in public. Including the state.

Crime is a social problem, not a technology problem.

Scandavian countries are better sociably, lower crime.
