Would disclosure really be so terrible?
...The polls clearly show that nearly half of the american population believes we are being visited, correct? But we do not see half the population running around in fear. That half of the population lives perfectly normal lives.

Because there is an ENORMOUS difference between "believing" something may be true and KNOWING it is true.
Think of it this way: A majority of the population also believes in GOD. But they continue with their lives as normal even with such belief - as it is just a belief, a faith - nothing more. Now imagine if God (ANY God) suddenly appeared as a giant floating being in the clouds and started hurling lightning bolts down or sending squads of angels or whatever. Well - THEN this majority (and just about everyone else) would indeed start running in circles screaming their heads off or down on their knees sobbing, etc. Get it?
Belief is one thing. Up in your face is another all together. Belief is easy, harmless, dismissible. Reality is cold, humbling, potentially dangerous, anxiety-ridden.
