So we've just ridden out "one of the strongest magnetic storms in years" according to space weather and in the past few days we were blessed yet again with numerous theories that magnetic storms cause earthquakes.

As you can see on
USGS, we had just 2 mag 5 earthquakes...strongest storm in years and all we get is 2 mag 5 quakes??

We had 9 mag 5 quakes 3 days ago!

What's going on here?

Still good opportunity for Auroras if you're close enough to the poles.

My power was out all day...I wonder if it was related???

Oh wait I got a letter a week ago from the power company saying that they were carrying out maintenance today.

Convenient...

The threads I read said solar activity might trigger earthquakes, not create them..

I read that to mean if there was an earthquake imminent then the activity would possibly bring it on..

It's like they say smoking causes cancer but still not all smokers get it and some that never smoke do.

I've lost count of the different theories out there.

Just wondering where these theories are at since this storm is bigger than the one that was supposed to have caused/created/assisted the Japanese quake.

Bigger maybe but weren't they all just M class flares?
Usually it's the X class they discuss mostly but to be honest I didn't follow those threads much..

March 10 was an X flare.

Yes an X flare around the Japanese quake but as I said, these last ones were only M flares right?

Correct.

They were more powerful because they combined.

Sorry mate, but no predictions for WA showing up on my radar for the next month.

Speaking of earthquakes, here in Australia we had a documentary tonight on the big one in San Francisco back in 1906.

We may have to wait a few days to see the end result:

Although the protons have dropped some, they are still higher than normal:

Exactly. When I originally said that, I was speaking of the Elenin "alignments" causing earthquakes, but the sentiment is exactly the same: trying to find a correlation between CMEs/solar flares and earthquakes is like finding a correlation between my cat and dead Texans.

Solar and seismic activity are not explicitly related. And, even if they are, so what? When a CME, like this one, does not cause an earthquake of any significance, again like this one, and the excuse is "Well, not all CMEs are guaranteed to cause earthquakes because there has to be an area capable of producing an earthquake for the CME to trigger," then what's the point? That's how earthquakes happen anyway... by the release of pressure from areas capable of producing earthquakes.
The solar-seismic correlation is a baseless, senseless, and pointless "theory".

Oh...and my cat's been dead for 2 years.
