Apparently, this blimp was supposed to be in flight for 10 days over Harrison County Ohio. Obviously, if this was just a test that still means they're testing it for later use.

Maybe they're getting ready for something? The black part looks like solar panels.

And if they weren't testing? What is there of interest to the military in ohio?

It was launched in Ohio but came down just over the border in Greene County Pennsylvania.

Strange that they would risk UFO sightings and all during this 10 days it would've been afloat. The police knew of the launch but the general public didn't.

For some reason, probably from Hollywood movies, I picture a nazi airship in my head when I see that.

I once worked at a place called, at the time, Lockheed Martin, in Piketon,OH. I was a security escort for about 5 months there, and I did see some strange things during my short time working there. Probably the strangest thing I found was, that it has facilities up to 3 miles underground, and also houses some of the largest hangers in the world. The hangers were one of many places I didn't have the clearance to go. Today, they are known as U.S.E.C. (United States Enrichment Corporation). They seem to change their name every 5 years. Before usec and lockheed, they were known as Martin Marietta.

So with that, it's easy for me to think it was born there. A retired employee, who used to be a security officer there, once asked me if I had ever seen the Will Smith movie, "Enemy of the State." He then continued to say that the plant had that kind of technology back in the 80s. Even though I once worked there, the place still gives me mysterious vibes. Personally, I call it the Area 51 of Ohio.

This video shows a close up look at the blimp.

It sure had a nice size hole in it.
They said it was supposed to hover 60,000ft. up. So I guess that's where we start looking for these things.
According to the report this was a test of a blimp the Army would use for surveillence/communication purposes.

Interesting story. Is there a link that can verify that this was indeed a Military Surveillance Blimp?

www.armytimes.com..

Link also has some details about the ship.

The blimp got to 32,000 feet but couldn’t climb higher, so controllers in Akron, Ohio, decided to bring it down with a “controlled descent” in a sparsely populated area, some heavy woods near New Freeport, about 45 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The ship is 270 feet long, 70 feet in diameter and filled with helium and air, which were released gradually to bring the ship to Earth. “There is no way for the airship to come down with it all filled,” Little said. “That’s how we bring it down.”

Edit: Sorry, that didn't answer your question. But this does!

The test vehicle isn’t full size, but is made to climb to high altitude and linger there using small motors for surveillance purposes.

The goal of the program is to create an airship that can hang in the air 12 miles above the ground with surveillance capabilities like a satellite at a much lower cost.

Thank you for the link.

It looks to me like those "crazy conspiracy theorist" were right again. People saw this coming down the pike with the Patriot Act, with the funding described in the Defense Funds, etc etc. There should be no doubt now that all these surveillance things for "terrorist" will be turned on the general public. We are the terrorist.

Pentagon plans blimp to spy from new heights
The giant dirigible would use radar to closely and constantly monitor activity on the ground from 65,000 feet.

March 13, 2009|Julian E. Barnes

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon said Thursday that it intends to spend $400 million to develop a giant dirigible that will float 65,000 feet above the Earth for 10 years, providing unblinking and intricate radar surveillance of the vehicles, planes and even people below.

"It is absolutely revolutionary," Werner J.A. Dahm, chief scientist for the Air Force, said of the proposed unmanned airship -- describing it as a cross between a satellite and a spy plane.

The 450-foot-long craft would give the U.S. military a better understanding of an adversary's movements, habits and tactics, officials said. And the ability to constantly monitor small movements in a wide area -- the Afghanistan- Pakistan border, for example -- would dramatically improve military intelligence.

"It is constant surveillance, uninterrupted," Dahm said. "When you only have a short-time view -- whether it is a few hours or a few days -- that is not enough to put the picture together."

The project reflects a shift in Pentagon planning and spending priorities under Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, who has urged the military services to improve intelligence and surveillance operations while cutting high-tech weaponry costs.

If successful, the dirigible -- the brainchild of the Air Force and the Pentagon's research arm -- could pave the way for a fleet of spy airships, military officials said.

They must have lost control of it, why else would they "terminate" the blimp in such a way? I wonder how they brought it down? I did see a big hole in the side. They definately didn't want it to get away from them.

Aside from the out-of-place nature soundtrack, here's a great video with a nice compilation of the events that unfolded including footage of the blimp being launched!

Reminds me of a remote contolled UFO blimp I used to have.

United States Enrichment Company does not have any hangers.

The enormous buildings you saw were part of a gaseous diffusion plant for the isotopic enrichment of uranium, likely non-operational.

The various contractors (Lockheed, etc) get the "management contract" to run various DOE facilities.

E.g. in the mid 1990's "Martin Marietta" had the contract for the Oak Ridge site including the lab, the Y-12 plant and the K-25 plant (also a decommissioned gaseous diffusion plant).

Martin Marietta was purchased by Lockheed----why it's called "Lockheed Martin". There is no aerospace there.

Why does an aerospace company run an industrial site? Because the core competency of Lockheed Martin is not in technology, it is in government procurement & bidding process.
