On this day 139 years prior a man was born in the great state of Vermont who would arise to become President of these United States. A man of immense intellect and wisdom which was often overshadowed by his reserved personality. Many are not impressed by one who speaks few words, exhibits restricted emotion, and was morally restrained.

Yet this person was able to ascend to the Presidency, albeit unexpectedly, and win reelection with one of the highest vote margins in American history. Unfortunately however not many people in these days give much care towards his legacy. I of course speak about Calvin Coolidge.

On this day, July 4th, shall we not only celebrate the day our nation declared its independence from the Empire of Great Britain but also pay homage to Mr. Coolidge. He may be relegated to history books and forgotten by the many among us however for me he remains a person whom I look up to in reverance.

May I share with you a quick passage from this Source.

When Calvin came to Burlington for a visit, she wanted him to meet one of her college friends, from the University of Vermont, who lived about eight miles out of town. Calvin donned a blue serge suit, put fashionable new shoelaces in his patent-leather oxfords, and they rode out in a horse-drawn buggy. Once they were seated in the friend’s parlor after introductions, Grace recalled of her fiance, “Not one word did he utter and when, at last, he could bear it no longer, he arose and said simply, with one of his best smiles, ‘We’ll be going now.’”

Happy birthday America and Mr. Coolidge.

Here is another impressive quote which the people of Vermont may particularly enjoy.

"If the spirit of liberty should vanish in other parts of the union... it could all be replenished from the generous store held by the people of this brave little state of Vermont,"

Source

This quote speaks more about our nation than the others.

"If all men are created equal, that is final. If they are endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their powers from the consent of the governed, that is final. No advance, no progress can be made beyond these propositions."

"Closed-mouth Cal" remains, in my mind, one of the most underrated presidents in this country's history. Thank you for posting this!!

One of my favorite sayings of all time is from Calvin Coolidge:

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race”

Calvin Coolidge ordered the poisoning of U.S citizens.

He's a sellout, just like Jefferson.

He didnt order the poisoning of citizens. He ordered that industrial alcohols have additives that would make it less easy to extract the pure alcohol from said industrial supplies. You statement is propaganda, and implies that he poisoned supplies that were MEANT for human consumption.

Completely and totally false.

It doesn't matter if he meant to poison humans or not, the fact is he did poison them.

They ordered the poisoning of industrial alcohols manufactured in the United States, products regularly stolen by bootleggers and resold as drinkable spirits. The idea was to scare people into giving up illicit drinking. Instead, by the time Prohibition ended in 1933, the federal poisoning program, by some estimates, had killed at least 10,000 people.

So your argument is that he was bad becuase he ordered additives be put in industrial chemicals that were never meant for human consumption in the first place?

So if you go drink fingernail polish remover, and get sick, that is someone else's fault?

Come on now. If people are trying to get drunk off of industrial chemicals, they deserve what they get.

Rock, have you been sampling some of these chemicals?

Thanks, Misoir. Mr. Coolidge was one of the finest presidents in our rich history. He was a shining light of humility, brilliance, and integrity lost in the sea of inky blackness created by Wilson that has never been lifted since.

My sister likes to inhale compressed air, if Obama ordered compressed air manufactures to put poison in their product -- would he not be responsible for killing the people who like to inhale compressed air?

Guess what....it is a federal crime to huff compressed air, as it is a federal crime to use ANY industrial chemical for uses other than its intended purpose. So right there, your sister is in the wrong, and no one else.

Furthermore, compressed air DOES have harmful chemicals in it (freon) and your sister is not too bright for doing it, as it will likely eventually kill her.

Finally, no, Obama would not be responsible. Your sister would, for using industrial chemicals to get high.

Personal responsibility much?

I see your point. He knew they would steal it and use it to make booze and consequently die.

Pretty straightforward to me, he is a murderer plain and simple, close-mouthed or not.

If you poison a product that you know people consume with the sole intent of harming those people, then yes you are guilty.

We are talking about industrial chemicals. They were poisonous to begin with. They were never meant for human consumption. How can you intentionally poison what is already poisonous?

This was about making it harder to extract the alcohol illegally.

If you put something into a substance with the sole intent of killing people who drink that substance, regardless of whether the substance was poisonous to begin with, and people die from the poison you put in that substance then you're nothing more than a murderer. Poisoning something with the intent of killing whoever drinks it is murder.

So show me ANY proof that the intent was to kill people. ANY. There is none, because it wasnt. It was about making it less easy and less appealing to extract the alcohol, which was an illegal practice in the first place.

Again, these were chemicals that were poisonous in the first place.

And again I will ask, if you drink nail-polish remover and die, were you murdered, or stupid?

Haha, by your logic if the president ordered grocery stores to poison spoiled food before the staff threw it out and that ended up killing a lot of poor people -- that would be fine? Since people shouldn't be eating rotten food out of the trash anyway.

Technically that rotten food is poisonous and it was never meant for human consumption.

Yeah, because that is the same thing at all. You are comparing food that at one time was MEANT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION to CHEMICALS that never were meant for such things.

Quite the stretch there.

The bottom line is you want to try and sensationalize this into something it is not.

Any relevant arguments to make?

There are many things that people aren't suppose to eat or drink, but some odd people still do it anyway. Even if it's illegal, that doesn't give anyone the authority to poison it in an attempt to stop them.

What Calvin Coolidge did was wrong.

And if those people do so knowing that it is a poisonous substance, they have no one to blame but themselves. Seems funny to me that you all assume no one died from drinking these poisons BEFORE Cal upped the amount of additives in them.

That was probably his fault to though.

Again, personal responsibility. You drink poison to get high, you risk dying. Pretty simple.

People die from drug overdoses and alcohol poisoning all the time.

That doesn't give the govt the right to step in and add ``more`` poison to it, just because it's already harmful. How many tenths of a second do you think before you post this nonsense?
