Good points. I think the OP is mainly for "inside" dogs who aren't accustomed to extended time in outside weather. That being said, some poor dogs are "outside" dogs. I feel for them, for many of them are simply tied to a spot so long that they walk on the grass until it is nothing but a dirt circle. They are lucky if they have a dog house. Many people love them as puppies but then neglect and forget about them once they are adult dogs. The worst of it is that the dogs may go long stretches without enough food, water, attention and love. Why even HAVE a dog if it's going to be neglected in such a way?

But isn't that just nature taking its course? Animals kill to eat, they don't care if it's your family pet or not they just see lunch.

I can't believe you're still in this thread, please take your ego somewhere else; we're talking about animal cruelty. Get over yourself and talk about that. It's a reality and making semantic arguments with the OP is ridiculous.

Do the research, read up on how closely linked humanity's survival was dependant upon and along side of the lowly "dog".

We two species got together and decided to support each other in order to survive and this is how we treat our best friend.

Busy right now with something else but there is a good deal of scientific study (Google will find a bunch) that indicates man owes a great deal of his evolutionary success to the domestic dog. Perhaps, without them we would not have enjoyed the success at the top of the food chain that we do now.

I have two working dogs (cattle) their service and skill makes my job so much easier when it comes to moving and separating the herd. They sure to make up for my mediocre horsemanship skills! I couldn't imagine having to handle the tasks associated with running my cattle operation without them.

I have a south african boerboel that the breeder imported from south africa.he is trained in search and rescue and instinctivly guards, just had to tweak him.He often travels with me as i will take him to assist in searches.while he is waiting in the vehicle he has water, and the a/c is always on and windows cracked when summer.Ive had to leave him there for 15 to 20 mins in the past.Ill pay the gas.And someone getting in the vehicle would be a bad outcome for them.I train dogs so my advice is 1)crate train your dog at home,2)socialise your dog,3)work your dog.make the dog earn everything it gets.4) If your going to own a dog train it or have it trained.I dont know if you have ever been overseas, but their domestic dogs and those in the US are two totally separate beings. For one...they will bite without hesitation. They live just fine without hardly any assistance from humans.Leaving your dog alone in a vehicle is just a bad idea and practice. But alot of people live by bad ideas and practices.I just keep a lookout when ever im out and about.Had to help a few of the little guys out a time or two.

www.pointerrescue.org... Did a home check on us, came out, looked at every room in our house, met and talked with my husband, son and me and did a background check.

It was like adopting a baby.

It also costs $250.00

And Lucy is worth every single penny and more.

She is still shy, having been a puppy mill breeder dog for six years but she is sweet as honey and like I said in my previous post, every single one of the 16 people involved in getting her to us, rescuing her from being gassed, (google gassing dogs / no they don't float them down and out, too expensive).

We had to wait about a month and a half for lags to get scheduled, but these people, the rescuers are the real heros.

Don't buy from a pet shop, adopt, rescue, make a difference in just one entities life.

But don't adopt if you aren't prepared for a life long committment.

Our last Pointer, Odie lived with us for 15 years and he was 4-5 when we got him.

He was also a rescue dog.

All our dogs and cats have been "throw aways".

lol so you cannot have kids, so you have mentally lost it and are treating animals like a human.Good for you simple reality is to heard for you. Naming them calling them by there name to other humans, dogs dont name them selves, they are dogs. I call my dogs by there names to call them, I do not use there names to describe them to another human, it is an animal.

I can have kids and did. So I am smart enough to know the differeance from a KID AND A DOG.

Im so sick of you individuals crying about not having kids( we do not care if you can hace kids or not) and treating dogs or dolls like kids.

IT IS A DOG AN ANIMAL NOT A HUMAN.GET A LIFE.ADOPT.GET A HOBBY.YOUR DOG IS NOT YOUR KID.YOUR SICK FOR ACTING LIKE IT IS.

All of your statements are moronic, and just plain stupid.

If you care soooo much? why are you papmering a animal and letting millions of childern strave form lack of food and attention.

If you cared at all you would adopt, but no your shelfish and want an animal that will unconditonaly love you. IT WILL NOT< IT CANNOT LOVE IT IS A DOG LOVE IS A NUMAN EMOTION.

Your afraid of having kids and them not loving you, your probably right if you treat an animal like this

you leave your vehicle running unattended?!!! The ONLY time I EVER do that is if its in my driveway and I have to run back in the house for something. Winter or summer if there is no one behind the wheel the vehicle is shut off, even pumping gas in near zero degrees in the winter I NEVER leave the van running. The only rare occasions I do is when my wife is too tired or feeling unwell and doesn't want to get out for a grocery stop. In those cases I leave it running with the AC or heat on depending on the weather. But she's an adult, not a child or animal.

Like someone else pointed out, your brightest dog is about as smart as a two or three year old child. Think of it this way. Would you take your 2-3 year old to the grocery store just to leave them inside your car while you run in "quick" to get something?

I stay out of other peoples business. I wouldn't intervene if I saw two adults in any kind of altercation. Except maybe a rape.

Animals and children however, I'd be hard to hold back if i saw any kind of abuse.

Guess I've always liked dogs more than I like most people.

Don't assume all dogs are outside dogs. There are dogs that can't live outside and may get killed by coyotes or predatory birds...

Then they are a valid link in the food chain, Coyotes and birds gotta eat too.

People who get a dog should treat it like a child. They are living creatures. Policy is another topic all together. The fact that corporations market and breed dogs in mass, like an overstocked car, is an unfortunate reality. If you want to stop that, then start a new post. Meanwhile, this topic reflects current owners and how they should be better aware of how fragile these animals are. It is a good reminder for everyone and i appreciate he effort made by the author.

A lot of parents get dogs for there wining little kids just to shut them up, then the child is never taught how to be responsible for the living being. The dog then continues to develop untrained and will most likely be considered a bad dog. It is like sending your kid to his room instead of school and wonder why the are so stupid later....must be a brain damaged kid...ritalin follows..etc...that is another topic.

Ps.... I typed this on an ipad so sorry for spelling grammar mistakes.
Invest in a dog and make it yout goal to give that life form the best life you can provide.

When it's -30 celcius most of the long winter, yes, everyone here leaves their vehicle running. Even the cops. If we don't, it won't start unless I've parked somewhere that there is a plug in for the block heater. I had the battery die once when I was filling it at a gas station, but I never keep it running while getting gas. There will always be someone there to jump start it. I carry 2 sets of keys at all times.

I don't take him during our 2 months of summer, unless it's a cloudy cooler day, or it's first thing in the morning. I won't leave him in the truck with the A/C running, because I don't trust the A/C to stay cold enough. A/C is more likely to not work properly than the heater. It rarely ever gets used up here.

No, I would never leave a child, even for just a second. But a shihtzu isn't going to possibly play with the shifter or pedals, and he's as safe in the truck as him staying home. I live near a small town. If I'm going into the larger city for something, I leave him home, or go with someone else, so that there will always be someone with him, because my biggest fear in a larger city, is someone stealing him.

Having four dogs myself, whenever I hear about a dog being abused (including being left in a hot car... or left anywhere alone for that matter), I'm horrified.

I know it's weird... but I'm more affected by animal suffering than human suffering. Like, when I read about people dying, it doesn't faze me much. But when I read a story about the unfair death of a dog, it upsets me. Probably because dogs are innocent.

I remember once being in English class (sophomore year of college, ah... the good days) and we read a book where a dog was killed with a garden fork. During the discussion section, I explained that the death of a dog is more horrifying to me than the death of a human. Needless to say, everyone in my class looked at me funny.
But think about it. If a human sees another human coming menacingly towards him with a sharp garden fork - he's gonna run away, or at least fight back. A dog doesn't have that kind of knowledge (well, depending on the dog). A well adjusted dog that's used to being treated kindly would see no threat. So it wouldn't be able to defend itself.

The idea of a dog left in a car... panicked about when it's master will return, slowly getting hotter and hotter as it freaks out and exerts itself in panic - horrifies me.

Even when I had to pick up an abused puppy from Ohio (an 11+ hour drive)... I never left him in the car alone. I even made sure I had a friend come with me so that we could take turns in the bathroom, or getting food, at rest stops.

But as for NEVER leaving dogs alone. That's a little bit extreme. I have a large fenced in backyard and a doggie door. So my dogs have free reign over the backyard... they can go outside whenever they want (unless they decide to be loud mouths, then the doggie door is closed for a little bit so the neighbors don't get irritated). They also run around the house wherever they want. The house is dog-proof. There's nothing dangerous that they can get into (unless you count the occasional tissue they pull out of the trash). But I'll admit... there is always someone in the house with the dogs. So although they are "alone"... there is still someone around, just in case.

Anyway, I could ramble on forever about doggies. I love 'em. They are certainly man's best friend.

I bore three sons, all are good human beings - grown.

But, there is nothing like a dog.

You believe you ar superior because you are an almighty human.

I suggest you read "Dominion" by Matthew Scully, it just might give you a more universal perspective.

And as for starving people.

I donate two days a month at a food shelter.

There are at least 20,000 children a day that die from lack of food and clean water.

Yes my dog lives better than them.

But, I have been betrayed and mistreated by so many humans and never once by a dog.

Yes and the conspiracy is against man's best friend.................how about you lock yourself up in a car wearing a coat with no air or water for one hour.

Then report back how you felt?

This was meant to as a service annoucement to remind people that animals, are not things, not trophies, not living toys to be toted around but living entities that deserve respect, love and care.

Don't like the thread than leave, shouldn't have come here in the first place - go elsewhere your choice was to come to this thread.

And it's a better one than many.

**** Also If anyone has a dog in the garage, be careful, and make sure the antifreeze is stored really out of reach, lock it up if possible..............many dogs drink it and die this time of year.

Star and flag on general principle, even though this doesn't really belong on a consipracy site.

I have a Keeshond and thats pronounced "Kays" "Hond" (like Bond in James Bond) and she is a total shade hound in the warmer months.

Protect your pets like you would protect any member of your family.

However it goes without saying, if Humans can exact cruelty upon our own...
