Secret ingredients in beer!

Topic started on 10-8-2004 @ 02:03 PM by Perfect stranger

I've been into homebrewing beer for a number of years and have tried alot of pretty cool recipies.

Are there any really secret ingredients people have used?

Our local brewery (Banks's) did a speciality beer a couple of years ago that was made with curry powder. I certainly wouldn't recommend it!

Is it true that some beers such drop a slab of steak into the brewer to give that 'disgustingly thick' taste?

Hoegaarden Grand-Cru is brewed with cinnamon, orange peel, and a few other extra ingredients...

Froach Scottish Ale uses heather flower instead of barley. It gives the beer a nice fruity flavor, without being too sweet. If you're in the states, getting fresh heather flower could prove difficult, though (even trying to find heather honey here is an exercise in futility)
