In west Texas and lesser places around the world, they would call that an oil field spill of black crude.
I think see a Shell logo sign erected near one of those craters.

So we invent this scenerio: A small body smashes into Mars and digs deep enough to start an oil gusher. Or alternately, perhaps Obama is fixin' to assign the drilling/fracking rights rights up there and Shell if not others have used their black triangles to haul the gear up there already and jumped the gun a bit.

That answers a whole host of questions about Mars. Who would have thunk it? The Martians are probably livin' high on the hog with all of them there oil royalities.

'Course,' could be something else going on, I suppose.

That is definitely a thought that crossed my mind.. ya know, if oil is abiotoic or whatever, created by the planets process then maybe this could be an oil geyser field or something
